Description: This teen show/novel is a mix of the Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars. 5 students at Bayview high get detention when Simon dies from a fatal allergic reaction. All the students have an individual motive for wanting him dead, which causes an investigation into all the students’ lives and reasoning for wanting to see Simon, the class gossip, dead.

  1. Dune

Author: Frank Herbert

Starring: Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista 

Description: The story follows Paul Atreides, son of noble Duke Leto, who has a great destiny thrust upon him on the planet Dune. The planet Dune contains a “spice” that the universe is dependent on. Paul’s noble family accepts stewardship of the planet Arrakis. Politics, action, and space all come together in this movie.

  1. The Nightingale

Description: The story follows the lives of two sisters separated during World War II. Both embark on separate journeys in German-occupied France. This novel portrays the testimony of the strength of women.

Description: In the fictional town of Cabrillo, California, 9 strangers gather at a retreat house which says it heals the guests who stay there. The retreat is not what it seems as the secrets of the retreat and of those on it come out into the open.

Description: The story follows the rise of a rock band in the 1970’s in LA. The documentary style shows the reasons for their split at the height of their success.

  1. Outlander (series) (season 6)

Starring: Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin 

Description: Claire Randall, a World War II combat nurse, mysteriously travels back in time to 1793 Scotland at the time of the warrior culture of the Jacobite Rising. She falls in love with a Highland warrior named Jamie as their lives are continuously threatened by warring clans and the British. The show’s 6th season is premiering next. Each novel in the series pertains to a season of the television show. You can catch up on previous seasons on Netflix or Starz. 

Release Date: Early 2022, show has already wrapped filming (the show has already been renewed for a season 7). 

  1. Percry Jackson

Author: Rick Riordan

Starring: No casting announcements yet. 

Description: The first season will follow The Lightning Thief, the first book in the series. 

Release Date: As of July 2021, the show is now in full development with casting and writing underway. It is estimated to come out in 1-2 years (2022-2023). Rick and Becky Riordan are writers and producers on the show. 12-year-old Percy learns he is the son of Poseideon, the Greek god of the sea, and must go on a quest to catch the thief who stole Zeus’s master lightning bolt. 

  1. The Summer I Turned Pretty

Author: Jenny Han

Starring: Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Jackie Chun, Rachel Blanchard 

Description: This is a coming-of-age story that follows Belly who has a summer love triangle romance with the two brothers of her family friends. There is heartbreak, young love, family relationships, female empowerment, and the magic of that one perfect summer. 

Release Date: Show is currently in pre-production; estimated to come out early 2022 

  1. The Vanishing Half 

Author: Brit Bennett 

Where to watch: HBO

Starring: No casting has been announced yet. 

Description: The story follows the two Vignes twin sisters who run away from their Black community at 16-years-old. This causes a separation that alters their social statuses, racial identities, and more. One twin ends up living with her daughter in the southern town she once tried to escape, while the other passes for white with her white husband knowing nothing of her past. The story reflects themes of family, colorism, and Black identity from the 1950’s to 1990’s.

  1. Chaos Walking

Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Daisy Ridley, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo  

Description: The story is about a dystopian world without women where all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts through sounds and images called “the Noise.” Todd, a young man who lives in this world, must help protect a woman (Ridley) who crash-lands on the planet.
