The Lessons I Learned from ‘To All the Boys: Always and Forever’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

Like most people that I know, Netflix’s third and final installment of the To All the Boys movies was one that I was highly anticipating. I always enjoyed the cute (and very predictable) storyline, the fashion, the characters, and much more.  During my viewing of the movie, it occurred to me just how much I can learn from Lara Jean in this movie, so I want to explain:

  1. “Life is beautiful, and messy, and never goes according to plan. And the truth is, I have no idea what it has in store for me”: I think most people can relate to this line from the ending of the movie, especially regarding plans for this past year. For me personally, I was supposed to study abroad in Fall 2020, and then pushed to Spring 2021, and then pushed to Fall 2021, and then got pushed to Spring 2022, which I cannot do because it will be my last semester of college. For me, this was crushing because studying abroad was my biggest dream for my college experience. However, like Lara Jean explains, I don’t know what life has in store for me, but I do know that I am excited for what is to come. I believe that when one door closes another one (or many more) open. I think this is a good mindset to have right now, especially as we are starting to see more and more hope for the future.
  2. Follow your own heart and own dreams: In this film, we see Lara Jean torn between staying close to home in order to be closer to her boyfriend and moving to New York where she feels like her dreams are. We see her choose New York, and I was really happy she did. It shows everyone watching that chasing your own dreams is very important for finding your own personal happiness. Anyone that loves you will support you in the pursuit of your dreams.
  3. I need to go to Seoul ASAP: Remember how I mentioned that I was supposed to study abroad. Well, I was supposed to study abroad in SEOUL, where Lara Jean and her family went at the beginning of the movie. Even though I wanted to go there before, I want to go even more now. One of my college friends watched this movie before I did, and she texted me saying that she thought of me because of the Seoul part of the movie.

I recommend watching this movie if you haven’t seen it already because it’s a nice ending to a good series, and there are some good life lessons along the way!
