How to maximize space in your tiny dorm room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

Trying to find the best way to set up your dorm room? Follow these tips in order to maximize space and turn your tiny room into the place you call home!

Set up is everything!

By coordinating with your roommate where you set up your furniture can make a huge difference. Avoid having your bed stick out and try to keep your furniture outlining the room pushed against all walls. By doing this, you create less obstacles getting in your way and you gain space in the middle of your room for walking around.

Raise your bed!

Most college dorm beds will rise on their own to a height that gives enough space for underneath storage. Although this is the case, it is an extra benefit to also use bed risers. Even if it is only a few inches higher, it leaves a lot more space for storage under your bed. This can include putting your fridge under or your wooden furniture supplied by the school. You can also use the extra space to store bins of clothes or different items that you may not need until the winter.  This will also leave more space in your closet and drawers for seasonal clothing and other items you need to store away.

Extra Storage bins

School furniture just isn’t enough for us girls. If you are like me and bring almost your entire wardrobe to school because you just never know what you are going to want to wear, then extra storage bins are necessary. Whether they are plastic bins or wooden storage units with cute bin inserts, they will both fit under your raised bed and help to add extra space for clothing. I always used mine for my small items such as bras and socks so that my bigger drawers could be used for my pants, sweatshirts, and shirts. These bins are also very useful for storing shower/bathroom supplies, food, school supplies, shoes, etc.
