5 DIY Costumes of Your Favorite Female TV Characters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stockton chapter.

To many, Halloween is seen as a day filled with fright, fun, and copious amounts of sugar. To the rest of us, who have hopefully outgrown trick-or-treating, it’s an excuse to imitate our favorite characters, people, and things. Every year, drones of cats, witches, and Minnie Mouses take over. The endless monotony of the same costumes gets more tiring with every year. If you want to break the Halloween humdrum, try emulating your favorite fierce TV leading lady.

1. Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

Whether you know her as the Mother of Dragons, the Breaker of Chains, or any of her many titles, any GoT fan knows that Daenerys is goals. Not only is she the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, but of our feminist hearts. This leading lady is everything we want to be: intelligent, strong, and fiercely independent. Also, her hair game is so strong that it’s hard to focus on anything else. Channel your inner dragon this Halloween, because everyone deserves to feel like a queen, and you’ll see if you can pull off being blonde!

2. Tina Belcher, Bob’s Burgers

Guaranteed, you’ve said “me” or “same” when watching Tina Belcher on the hit cartoon, “Bob’s Burgers.” Tina is literally all of us during finals when she says “If you need me, I’ll be down here on the floor. Dying.” Tina is a young woman who knows who she wants and what she wants, and she is not afraid to say it. Her obsession with Jimmy Jr. brings us back to a time in middle school, where a lot of us resembled and acted like Tina. If you relate to Tina Belcher on a spiritual level everytime she says “uhhhhh,” then you should definitely follow this DIY video to be a Tina twin this halloween:

3. Nancy Wheeler, Stranger Things

If you have a Netflix, then you are probably one of the countless who is currently obsessed with the latest Netflix Original, “Stranger Things.” If you don’t have a Netflix, I’m sorry, because that is extremely upsetting. Stranger Things has accumulated an almost cult-following, for good reason. Nancy Wheeler, a supporting character, provides a strong female role that makes us want to say “yaaas, Nancy” everytime she speaks. Nancy is a caring, and tenacious individual who is determined to find her friend, and uncover what’s going on in her town. Try out this DIY to mimic Nancy’s look. You should be Nancy this Halloween because we all saw Nancy wearing high waisted jeans and a shearling jacket, so we bought high waisted jeans and a shearling jacket.

4. Cristina Yang, Grey’s Anatomy

Another fan favorite, Grey’s Anatomy is a show full of tears, drama, McDreamy and McSteamy. While the show is unreasonably dramatized, it does have some great characters. One highly underrated character is Cristina Yang, the assertive, devoted, intern that slays the game from day one. She is extremely focused, and knows what she has to do to get what she wants. Cristina is never afraid to speak up, and is legit career goals for anyone who wants to be a doctor someday. While Meredith cries about McDreamy, she is making strides in her career. Cristina Yang inspires us to stop at nothing to get what we want, and to be hilarious while we do it.

To imitate Cristina this Halloween, all you need is a pair of light blue scrubs, a white lab coat, curled hair, and a bit of an attitude! You can even make yourself a Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital ID badge with her name.

5. Leslie Knope, Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation serves not only as a binge-worthy option on Netflix, but also as a source for inspiration. The show follows Leslie Knope, a spirited local-government employee in Pawnee, Indiana. She is a hilarious, stead-fast, and persistent woman who is constantly looking to better her town. Her love for waffles and Ben Wyatt is so relatable. Mostly because waffles are delicious and Adam Scott is adorable. She stops at nothing to get what she wants and has inspired us all to go the extra mile, to go to our 8 am classes, and to be the independent women we know we can be. All you need to be Leslie Knope is a blond wig styled with Leslie’s signature loose curls, a killer Clinton-esque pantsuit, and a plate of waffles.
