What is International Women’s Day? When is International Women’s Day? One, we are celebrating the achievements of women in history, duh. Two, March celebrates Women’s History Month where the International Women’s Day falls on March 8 of each year. There’s a little bit of history behind International Women’s Day that you should know, as well as what to do on this great day of appreciation of women around the world.
International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century! It is said to have been started around the 1900’s during industrialization in America and in Europe where women begin speaking out about their terrible working conditions. Since then the day has become known as a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity (International Women’s Day).
So what are ways we as women AND men can get involved on this day?
1. Educate Yourself!
Take time out of your day to read about the injustices that occur around the world towards woman. It’s significantly important to note that women struggle in different ways around the globe!
2. Activism Work!
Take action to your hands by standing up for reproductive rights, fair wages, and other women topics. You can do this either by lobbying or even attending a march!
3. Being simple matters too!
Spend the day with a close loved one who may be feeling down, support them throughout the day and be an active listener.
4. Say THANK YOU!
Call your grandmother, your mom, your sister, your aunt, your cousin, etc., let them know how much you appreciate them and remind them that the fight to equality and equity still continues strong!
