Your Guide to Summer Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stanford chapter.

With school almost over and those steamy days of summer ahead of us, there’s nothing better than cooling off in a movie theater.  There are a ton of summer blockbusters coming out, along with sequels and some smaller comedies too.  Her Campus has put together a list of must-see movies – some already in theaters and others hitting theaters later – all for your viewing pleasure.

“Something Borrowed” (In theaters now)
It’s a cute romcom about two best friends, a wedding and following your heart – lighthearted fare probably best seen with your girlfriends.

“Bridesmaids” (In theaters now)
Think of it as the female The Hangover.  It’s hilarious and more touching than gross-out.  Nobody can beat these queens of comedy, Kristen Wig and Maya Rudolf.  Guys and gals alike will enjoy this one.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”
(In theaters now)
So, the sequels to “Pirates” look like they are never going to end.  Why not just jump aboard and have fun?  In this fourth installment, Captain Jack Sparrow is as sprightly as ever (not to mention the fact that Johnny Depp is still strangely handsome-even with all that makeup and hair!).  Penelope Cruz joins the cast, along with some fierce, kick-ass mermaids.

“Thor” (In theaters now)
Better in 3D, Thor is surprisingly thrilling.  There are lots of laughs as the movie pokes fun at itself.  Also, great eye-candy and warrior outfits never hurt anyone (ladies, check out gorgeous Aussie Chris Hemsworth).

“Kung Fu Panda 2” (Out this Friday)
A second one?  This is just too good.  The first one was funny and sweet, so we’re expecting just as much if not more from the second one.  A funny line from the trailer seems to hint that there’s a lot coming our way, “Po, are you ready for the next step of your journey?” “Yeah, but first I need a snack.”  Ska-doosh.

“The Hangover Part II”
(Out this Friday)
The gang is back.  They may not be in Vegas, but Thailand sure sounds promising.  Usually nothing can beat an original but we’re sure willing to give it a shot if you are.  The fun will be seeing how they can top themselves.  Mike Tyson, anyone?

“Super 8” (June 10)
J.J. Abrams (of the mysterious and crazy hit show “LOST”) is back directing this film.  Taking some hints from Steven Spielberg, the producer, this movie looks a little less “E.T”. and a little more “Predator”, but finding out what large, frightening thing is inside that derailed train is worth discovering.

“Cowboys & Aliens” (July 29)
Cowboys and aliens are in one seemingly sincere, non-satirical movie.  There seems to be nothing better or cooler than that (especially since aliens are the new vampires anyway).  Part of the desire to see it is just the mystique.  How could cowboys and aliens share the same screen?  Add in Daniel Craig and you are good to go.

 “Fright Night”
(August 19, 2011)
This movie looks more hilarious than scary, starring Colin Farrell as a vampire living next door to a teenage boy who gets suspicious.  Looks like “Disturbia” mixed with vampires, but why not?  We’re excited to laugh and scream.
