In the early hours of November 9th, 2016 America had been heard. The 45th President of the United States of America was chosen. Donald J. Trump won the election. A surprise to many but nevertheless a result that says something about the condition of the people of the United States. For the first time, a product of Washington will not be our President. So what does this say for us? Right now, it’s saying that Americans are tired; they are tired of our country being focused on government and not people. In a tweet released from President Elect Trump, he speaks for those that feel their voice, and their opinion has been silenced for many years, “Such a beautiful and important evening! The forgotten man and woman will never be forgotten again. We will all come together as never before.”

A lot has been said throughout the campaign from both parties about the other. This election showed us the fight and intensity that America deserves. While at times there was less focus on policy than some could have hoped for, we saw passion. This country, our freedom, our rights, they are all prized possessions that should not be taken for granted. It is time now that we stand together as “one nation under God.”

A particular trend that in my opinion was frightening is the hashtag “#thatsnotmypresident.” Something that everyone needs to accept is that Donald J. Trump will be the 45th President of the United States, our commander and chief for the next four years, and the ruler of the all powerful U.S.A. In a country that prides themselves on democracy and equal opportunity, how can we make these claims? He is my president, he is your president. It does not matter if you voted for him. What matters now is that we stand together as a nation that has been divided for so many years. If you do not agree with something that Trump says, be proactive in a helpful way. This does not mean resort to social medias about your opinion. Contact local lawmakers, head to Washington D.C., and join advocacy groups that support your opinions. Those are all ways that you can make a difference!

In the words of the late John F. Kennedy, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” As we stand together today, let us be the difference. Show the world that America can be greater, that we are powerful and strong because we stand as one. Let your voice be heard, be proud of this country, and move forward as this is a part of history we all get to be a part of.

Congratulations to Donald J. Trump, may God bless you and all your endeavors as you sir are the leader of the free world. #youaremypresident

Hello there! I am the Campus Correspondent of the Her Campus chapter at Saint Vincent College. As a senior psychology major, I've made the most of my time in undergrad and am excited for all the doors I have opening ahead of me. I can definitely thank Her Campus for giving me invaluable skills. As a future psychologist, I hope that my articles (and the chapter's) are able to make you feel empowered, motivate you to start a conversation, and be kind. As a hero of mine has said, "If you do not take control over your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don't prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list."- Michelle Obama. Be the change you want to see in the world, and smile. Always smile!
