A new year means a new beginning and a fresh start. Many people, myself included, want to start the new year with healthier lifestyle choices. However, many people fail to achieve these goals because they look to the end goal, then get discouraged when they haven’t met that goal yet. What we often fail to realize is that when we set a goal or make a promise to ourselves, every day is a continuous battle to achieve that goal.
So, my advice to myself and to others is to change your life slowly. Plan to go to the gym every other day, go to sleep an hour earlier instead of watching the next episode of a tv show, choose to drink water instead of soda, or plan to talk to a counselor or therapist if you feel it might help. Physical, mental, and emotional health are all equally important. Small healthy choices throughout the day or week really add up! Remember that no one can lose 20 pounds in a week, defined muscles don’t show up after one workout, and talking about your personal mental health might not make you feel better right away. Patience and perseverance are both keys to success when trying to form a healthier lifestyle. Don’t beat yourself up if you make a mistake and, most of all, don’t forget to celebrate your progress!
