Trying new things can be terrifying sometimes. The fear of disappointment easily deters people from going after their goals. New opportunities are always popping up and it’s unfair to you to let any slip away because of self-doubt. Having the right mindset and confidence in your own abilities is key! Though this can be hard, I hope that with this article you find the motivation to go after things that may have once scared you because hey, why not?!

Think about how fulfilling this new opportunity will feel to achieve! Regardless if it’s applying for a new job, running for a leadership position, or something as simple as wanting to make a new friend or take up a new hobby – a new goal, big or small, sure does feel great to complete. The passion you have toward whatever you’re pursuing is the driving force, so don’t let second thoughts of self-doubt get in the way. That’s where we miss out on some of life’s best opportunities. When we let ourselves become our own worst enemies and this is in no way fair to our potential. They say you can achieve anything when you put your mind to it, and I couldn’t agree more. Mindset is everything!

It’s okay to be scared. If you’re worried about something, you care about it! Don’t let this fear or nervous feeling steer you away from the opportunity. It’s natural to feel anxious about the beginning of something new, but let the nervousness fuel your fire, not burn it out. This was always the hardest part for me when I was contemplating a new task. I would get so antsy about something that I would back out rather than letting my worries be a sign that this must be something I really care about. So next time you’re feeling apprehensive, be sure to remind yourself about how important this is to you. It’s a far worse feeling to let a great opportunity slip away than being a tad nervous in the pursuit.

Failure isn’t guaranteed. When pursuing a new task or adventure in life, don’t go into it with the “I’m set up for failure” attitude. Negative thoughts actually put you at a disadvantage from the start. Having confidence in yourself is the first step to achieving anything. To get the fulfillment you seek – you gotta believe in yourself! I know this can be hard. Like most of us girls, I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself too and am fearful of rejection. But its so important to keep your eyes on the prize and don’t accept failure before even trying. Even if the pursuit doesn’t turn out in your favor, look at this as a learning experience. That’s what failures are. They teach us, ground us, and motivate us for the next time! That’s the mindset we should have toward disappointments. Because letting this crush you, is letting it win. Let the experience drive your passion even further to make a name for yourself and prove people wrong!

Throughout my own life, I have missed so many opportunities just because I was too scared to try. Before, I was so afraid of failure that I would stay in the background and let opportunities slip through my fingertips. Now, with a level-headed confidence I have the ability to say, “go for it!!” I shoot my shot when I come across something I’m passionate about. I go after that leadership position I once thought I was unqualified for. Even if it doesn’t work in my favor, I no longer beat myself up over failures. I’ve found from going after things I wanted has paid off much more than I could’ve imagined. It’s crazy what you can do when you put your mind to it and have the confidence to go after it.

So, girl – never let anything get in your way (yourself included!) and don’t allow anyone to dull your sparkle!! You’re capable of achieving even your wildest dreams, you just have to have the confidence to go for it.

HCXO & Let’s do this thing,

Ash

Hello there! I am the Campus Correspondent of the Her Campus chapter at Saint Vincent College. As a senior psychology major, I've made the most of my time in undergrad and am excited for all the doors I have opening ahead of me. I can definitely thank Her Campus for giving me invaluable skills. As a future psychologist, I hope that my articles (and the chapter's) are able to make you feel empowered, motivate you to start a conversation, and be kind. As a hero of mine has said, "If you do not take control over your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don't prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list."- Michelle Obama. Be the change you want to see in the world, and smile. Always smile!
