Fred Rogers Scholar, Sydney Schoff

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Vincent chapter.

Name: Sydney Schoff

Hometown: Bel Air, Maryland

Year: Freshman

Major/Minor: Communication with Children’s Studies Minor

Her Campus (HC): Hi Sydney! Thank you for allowing us to interview you so that the Saint Vincent community can get to know you even better. What brought you to Latrobe?

Sydney Schoff (SS): “Until I actually started looking at colleges my junior year of high school I was convinced that I would go to school in Florida because I hate cold weather. So I guess the question of what brought me to Latrobe is even bigger now! But I knew that I wanted to go to small, Catholic school. One of my best friends from back home is a sophomore at SVC and she told me about it when she was applying. I went on my first visit the summer before my senior year and fell in love with the campus. I also met Professor Safin of the communication department who was so nice and helpful so meeting him definitely helped seal the deal.”

HC: I see that you are a freshman- how does it feel to almost be done with your first year of college?

SS: “It feels so amazing to be almost done with my first year of college. I thank God every day for the opportunity I have to attend such an amazing school and be surrounded with teachers and students that I know care about me and my future. I am very excited to see what the future holds.”

HC: That’s awesome! What clubs and activities are you involved with on campus?

SS: “The two main clubs I’m involved with are MADCOMM and the Festival of Praise (FOP) Ministry Team. I am secretary of MADCOMM and our weekly officer meetings definitely brighten my week. Everyone on the board is so amazing and talented. And being part of FOP is such a blessing. Through FOP I have met so many new people on campus who are so on fire for their faith and it’s truly inspiring to see. I am also in Alpha Lambda Delta and a Fred Rogers Scholar.”

HC: What is it like to be a Fred Rogers Scholar?

SS: “Being a Fred Rogers Scholar is one of my favorite things about being at Saint Vincent. Dr. Cook and Dr. Harvey have done amazing things with the program and we are like a little family. I’ve met some of my best friends at SVC through the Scholars and I honestly don’t know what I would do without them. (143 to all of you!)”

HC: If you had to choose your favorite quote from Fred Rogers, what would it be?

SS: “Wow, that’s really, really difficult. I think my favorite would have to be, ‘The world needs a sense of worth, and it will achieve it only by its people feeling that they are worthwhile.’”

HC: I am curious- what is your dream job?

SS: “I think my dream job would have to be working for BuzzFeed or a YouTube channel like SoulPancake. Both organizations bring people so much joy and their content is both deep and lighthearted. My main goal in life is to make content that matters and brings a smile to at least one person’s face. If I can do that then I’ll be living my dream.”

HC: Wow! If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

SS: “It’s on my bucket list to go to Sydney, Australia. It seems like a beautiful place and I want to get a picture next to a sign that says ‘Welcome to Sydney!’”

HC: Do you have a favorite genre of music and artist? If so, what and whom?

SS: “Anyone that I talk to for more than 10 minutes knows that my favorite band is Twenty One Pilots. My love of them and their music is definitely borderline obsessive but I am not ashamed at all!”

HC: If you could have dinner with a celebrity, who would it be? Why?

SS: “Hmm, probably the cast of Boy Meets World. It’s my favorite show of all time and I would love to hear all the behind the scenes stories.”

HC: Thank you so much for chatting with us. We wish you the best of luck for the rest of the year, and the happiest of summers! See you in the Fall
