Did you know that some of the lip balms you buy in stores actually dry out your lips? I don’t know about you, but I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life. Many lip balms contain humectants or menthol (that cool feeling on your lips) which will dry out your lips more than they will hydrate. Furthermore, there are so many ingredients in lip balms that I can’t even pronounce. If you are able to find a lip balm that is healthy for your lips with organic materials, each lip balm may cost $2-$4. If you’re like me and you lose your lip balms ALL the time, this begins to stack up overtime. This recipe uses organic, pure, or natural ingredients to make sure you have the healthiest, lushest lips around.

Materials:

* 2 tablespoons plant-based oil, such as olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, or jojoba oil.

For this recipe, I used 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil

* 1 teaspoon beeswax, grated or roughly chopped

I bought bars of beeswax online. I don’t think I will ever run out of beeswax (hmu if you need some beeswax bars!) I found these fairly difficult to work with. I would probably recommend getting little pellets or making sure the beeswax is cut super fine, or it will be difficult to melt.

* 1 teaspoon plant-based butters, such as shea butter, cocoa butter, or kokum butter

I used raw pure ivory shea butter

* ¼ teaspoon vitamin E oil

* Essential oils

I used organic lavender and organic sweet orange essential oil. I love the combination of these two oils.

* Choice of container – glass cosmetic jar or lip balm tubes. I found a little plastic jar at Target for less than a dollar (Target has everything!)

Instructions:

1. In a double boiler, melt your choice of the plant-based oils, grated beeswax, and plant-based butters using very low heat. If you don’t have access to a double boiler, putting a glass bowl over boiling water in a pan will work just as well to melt your butters and beeswax. Make sure to not burn any of your ingredients! Again, I found the beeswax extremely difficult to work with as it just did not want to melt! It was hard cutting the bar of beeswax, so I would recommend using an alternative to the bar, such as the pellets. This listing on amazon is a wonderful choice as it is organic certified.

2. After all the butter and beeswax has melted, remove from heat

3. Add vitamin E oil and stir until well combined

4. Stir in essential oils. I used 5-6 drops sweet orange and equal parts lavender essential oil. It smells absolutely lovely

5. Pour into choice of container. Make sure to do this quickly, as the mixture will start to cool and harden very quickly!

6. Cool, label, and use for smooth lips all winter!

This DIY was extremely easy to make. I love knowing exactly what ingredients I’m putting on my skin, especially my lips. The cleanup was messy though. The mixture started to harden as I was pouring it, so my glass bowl and wooden spoon I was working with were extremely difficult to get clean. Also, I found that the mixture became much harder than a normal lip balm. This may be due to too much beeswax, so I would suggest adding less than the recommended amount of beeswax. Overall, fairly successful DIY! I loved how easy it was to make although I wish it were easier to put on. Definitely a money-saver though plus a fun activity to try with friends!

Give this recipe a try and let me know what you think!
