7 Things No-one Tells You About Freshman Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Vincent chapter.

1) You will have SO much time to yourself- but don’t spend it all alone

College is a time where you actually do have a lot of free time to spend however you like. Some people spend this time studying and sitting in their room. That’s productive, but don’t forget to socialize! Make friends, and get involved! Soon, that free time will be filled with trips to Chipotle and meetings.

2) Yes, you will cry when your parents leave

Contrary to popular belief, you will miss your parents. It may not be as soon as they leave, but even 2 weeks, later you might find yourself missing their hugs or the home cooked meals.

3) Your roommate doesn’t have to be your best friend

Your roommate may be your first friend, but you don’t have to be attached at the hip. You might end up being best friends with your roommate, and that’s great. But don’t think you have to do everything with them if you guys are really different.

4) Be careful with boys

Freshman year is the time to meet new people, including guys. Don’t try to hook up with anyone the first weekend, or even the second weekend. Be careful with who you interact with, and don’t rush into anything.

5) You will find your friend group

Going to a new school is hard, but everyone is in the same boat. You don’t have to hang out with the people you meet the first weekend all year. It may take until the second semester, but you will find your niche. Don’t panic, because you’re not the only one in this situation.

6) It’s harder than you think to eat healthy

The first semester usually starts out really well. You eat healthy, not wanting to become a part of the freshman 15. Eventually, you fall into bad eating habits and all that healthy eating goes down the drain. Always make sure to be conscious about what you eat and how much you eat. Make healthy choices, it’ll make you feel so much better

7) Don’t rush it

Aside from all the homework, exams, and general stress about life, college can be fun! Don’t rush through your years, wishing them away. Before you know it, your first year of college will be over, and the next 3 years will be even faster.

Hello there! I am the Campus Correspondent of the Her Campus chapter at Saint Vincent College. As a senior psychology major, I've made the most of my time in undergrad and am excited for all the doors I have opening ahead of me. I can definitely thank Her Campus for giving me invaluable skills. As a future psychologist, I hope that my articles (and the chapter's) are able to make you feel empowered, motivate you to start a conversation, and be kind. As a hero of mine has said, "If you do not take control over your time and your life, other people will gobble it up. If you don't prioritize yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list."- Michelle Obama. Be the change you want to see in the world, and smile. Always smile!
