StO-Style: Hot Hues for Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

It’s only February, but spring is definitely in the air. Temperatures have been hovering in the 30s and 40s for the past few weeks, making me yearn for pretty spring clothes and strappy sandals. Given the many sightings of skirts and florals on campus, I know I can’t be alone with this sentiment!

Spring is the perfect time to update your wardrobe with some fresh, on-trend pieces. Since fashion trends can be hard to keep up with (are pastels hot right now, or is neon? Hint: it’s both), I’ve made a few helpful style boards of the hot colors in fashion right now: mint, tangerine, and cobalt. Read on for some spring outfit inspiration!

Mint

Top row: Knot Front Shirt $24 – topshop.com, Knitted Broderie Top $50 – topshop.com, Button Back Pansy Crop Tank $56 – topshop.com, Racerback $22 – madewell.com, French Terry Hoodie $40 – ae.com
Middle Row: Shorts $35 – topshop.com, Pocket Skirt $34 – shopruche.com, Stone Washed Jeans $47 – bankfashion.co.uk, Wrap Dress $50 – missselfridge.com, Ballet Flats $32 – topshop.com, Metallic Linen Women’s Classics $48 – toms.com
Bottom Row: Across Body Bag $36 – asos.com, Punchout Backpack $68 – asos.com, Snake Print Clutch $50 – oasis-stores.com, Infinity Scarf $20 – missselfridge.com

Mint has been seen everywhere lately: as a hair color, on nails, and on the runway. This color is cool yet sophisticated and can be translated into many different looks. Pair it with other pastels for the quintessential spring look or wear it with all black or grey for a tough-yet-girly vibe.

Tangerine

Top Row: Tank Top$30 – quiksilver.com, Striped Shirt $43 – net-a-porter.com, Drop Neck Bow Blouse $61 – missselfridge.com, Sweater $39 – topshop.com, Blazer $47 – hm.com
Middle Row: Jeggings $30 – tillys.com, Ruffle Dress $21 – dorothyperkins.com, Aztec Print Skirt $30 – missselfridge.com, Twill Shorts $50 – jcrew.com, Flats $15 – wetseal.com
Bottom Row: Sunglasses $31 – mango.com, Leather Clutch $39 – debenhams.com, Pointelle Beanie $32 – topshop.com

Tangerine was named Pantone’s color of the year for 2012, and for a good reason. This vibrant citrus shade looks good on anyone and adds a splash of bright color to any outfit. Wear all-black with one tangerine piece for a pop of color, or pair this hue with a floral skirt or blouse for a pretty spring look.

Cobalt

Top Row: Cardigan $36 – mango.com, Lace T-Shirt $55 – houseoffraser.co.uk, Tank $30- generalpants.com.a, Sheer Blouse $53 – weekday.com, Scarf $93 – bruunsbazaar.com
Middle Row: Striped Skirt $30 – generalpants.com.au, Shorts $50 – witchery.com.au, Crossover Dress $21 – dorothyperkins.com, Skinny Jeans $47 – missselfridge.com, Leather Gloves $50 – mango.com, RIng $48 – lordandtaylor.com
Bottom Row: Envelope Clutch $63 – asos.com, Suede Pumps $49 – zappos.com, Flats$75 – heels.com, Cuff $42 – nordstrom.com

Cobalt has been a trend since Fall 2011 and is still going strong. This beautiful and rich blue shade was seen on models walking for Monique Lhullier, Rachel Zoe, and Reem Acra during New York Fashion Week 2012. Wear a cobalt top with blue jeans for a monochromatic look, or pair a cobalt pice with other jewel tones, such as magenta and teal, for a color block effect.

Experimenting with different colors is a great way to change up your wardrobe for a new season. I’ve made sure that most of the pieces in the style boards are relatively cheap, so that even the smallest of college budgets can afford a few mint, tangerine, or cobalt pieces for spring.

So get ready for spring and stay fashionable, St. Olaf!
