Spring 2014 Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hello again fashionistas!

Welcome to second semester! Although it may not seem like it, spring is coming! A variety of Spring Fashion Weeks have already taken place in New York City, London and elsewhere around the world. That means fresh, new ideas to inspire our spring wardrobes. I looked at some of the top trends for the upcoming season and picked out a few wardrobe-worthy trends to try. Enjoy these spring fashion inspirations that can translate from the world’s runways to real-world wear.

Pastels

Pastels will be popular this spring. This color palette incorporates soft colors, like peach, sea foam, sky blue, faded yellows, and creams. There is also a reoccurrence of various shades of blush or rose on the runways. From what I can tell, the blush and rose shades will be quite on-trend in the spring. Additionally, be on the look-out for orange – I think it will be a hot color for the coming season!

With such light and delicate colors, I would recommend choosing a wardrobe piece that mimics this fresh characteristic. Try a silk top or an airy skirt. Also, I would avoid any really busy patterns or shapes – keep the look light with a simple design and silhouette.

Florals

Let your feminine side show this season with floral print. Floral is so versatile and can come in any sort of wardrobe piece. Try a floral dress, scarf (perfect for transitioning from cooler weather into warmer spring weather), or skirt. The most flattering and basic floral designs will come in small patterns, but there are also very cute and flattering larger prints. Choose whatever it right for you! I also recommend looking for bright and colorful floral-printed pieces. They will add a pop of color to your wardrobe and bring a fresh look for spring.

Pairing Socks & Heels

Another popular look for spring is tall socks with heels. This look is for those of us willing to venture to try out innovative trends. Try keeping the socks at either ankle or knee length with a plain pattern and standard color (gray, white, black). Pair a skirt or feminine pair of shorts with a long-sleeved layered look on top – maybe a blazer or cardigan over a collared shirt. Or, try a blazer or sweater layered over a solid-colored dress. Have fun experimenting with this trend!

Embellishments

To me, embellishments are always in style. But the runways saw a lot of added and emphasized embellishments for Spring 2014. So what exactly is the sort of embellishment to look out for? Well, think subtle sparkles, sewn-on additions like buttons or beads, or anything that adds extra interest to a piece. To translate this to everyday-wear, look for pieces with an embellished collar, shoulders or neckline.

Cropped Tops

This trend for Spring 2014 is also one that may take some guts, but even a subtle crop will allow you to take part in this trend if you don’t want to show-off your whole midriff. Try a subtle crop, maybe a few inches shorter than a normal shirt would be. Also, have fun with the pattern and style of the top. Scalloped edges or an interesting graphic would make the crop-top even more desirable!

Though we still have a few wintery months to endure, spring is just around the corner! Be inspired by these Spring 2014 fashion ideas and give one (or a couple!) a try in the upcoming season!

Stay fashionable, Oles!
