The 2011 Oscars were fashionable, as expected. Now that celebrities have personal dressers I rarely see anything that I totally hate, and usually when I dislike it, it still holds a certain appeal to a different audience. So today I’ll give out awards that don’t fit the normal categories of best and worst dressed.
1. Best at playing with shape- This award of course goes to Natalie Portman, who never really has a bad night out in the fashion world, because she generally plays it fairly safe. At the 2011 Oscars she had to work around her baby bulge and did it splendidly in her empire waist Rodarte gown.
2. Most likely to be seen at a medieval fair– Helena Bonham Carter did it again! Wearing a velvet corset, a floor length ill-fitting skirt and an embroidered fan she looks like she is dressed for Halloween, not the Oscars.
3. Bears the most resemblance to an Oscar– If Gwyneth Paltrow wanted to channel the theme of the night she certainly succeeded. Her floor length golden gown is certainly pretty, but also makes the statuesque actor look a little like the little man himself!
4. Best newcomer– Hailee Steinfeld not only shined in her performance in True Grit, but also on the red carpet. Her full skirted and delicately beaded Marchesa gown is perfectly paired with metallic accessories. The outfit is appropriate for the Hailee’s age without being too cutesy.
5. My personal favorite– Mandy Moore was absolutely stunning last night. Her Monique Lhuillier gown is classic and simple while still unique. Her ambitious center parted bun is also perfectly paired with costume-jewelry inspired earrings.
