Humans of St. Olaf: Mitchell Miller

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Class: 2018

Major: Chemistry with an Enviornmental Studies concentration

Favorite class you’ve taken:

Culture of Nature. I was awakened by the fact that “nature” and “wilderness” are completely man-made concepts. I also realized I’m a huge hypocrite when it comes to being green.

Favorite study spot:

The Regents big window (I’m actually there right now)! I’m all about open areas and views, although I could live without the slurping and gargling aquaponics tank.

Favorite caf creation:

Oatmeal with blueberries, natural peanut butter, cinnamon and soy milk. I dream about it every night before I go to bed.

Favorite St. Olaf memory:

Traveling to Bend, Oregon my freshman year for USCSA Nordic Skiing Nationals. Mountains, snow, sun, endorphins, wow.

(I heart skiing).

Favorite music:

Right now I’m really digging Lady Gaga’s new album, Joanne. The song “Amused” by Hunger is also pretty sweet.

(my dad’s idea of a fun family outing).

Favorite movie:

The Hunger Games (the first one). I eat up the blood and gore like a member of the Capitol — and that’s what makes the movie so terrifying. Plus you can’t go wrong with Jennifer Lawrence.

Favorite smell:

My favorite smell is the air that comes out of dryer vents. You might see me loitering behind a laundromat.

Have you ever studied abroad? Where would you like to go?

Not yet, but this spring, I am participating in a School for International Training program in Iceland and Greenland. I’ll be studying carbon management and the impacts of climate change on arctic ecosystems and communities. So pumped!

Is there anything new you still want to try while on the hill?

Phantoming in Rolvaag is definitely on my bucket list.

What is something you hope to do after college?

I hope to be a crew leader for Minnesota Conservation Corps after graduating, and then off to grad school for enviornmental chemistry.

(I also heart running).
