With Black Friday less than a month away, you’re probably shying away from digging too deep into your pockets to cover your Halloween Costume. And, amidst midterms, I don’t know how many of us are on top of things with regards to Halloween. I know I’ll be scrambling to finish my costume at 6 p.m. on Saturday before the Pause dance – especially because I had no desire to spend $30 on a Nurse outfit on Amazon.com So, for those of you in the same situation as me, let me offer some advice!
Two days ago, I made my bi-weekly visit to Northfield Ragstock for some errand or another. I caught myself looking at the packaged costumes sold for $30-$50. After looking at each costume available, such as Nurse, Pirate, Cop, and etc, I realized that mixing and matching items from a place like Ragstock would not only produce a unique look for the same idea, but it’d be cheaper!
Thinking about being a nurse? Scrubs at Ragstock cost $4-$5. As opposed to spending $20 more on the nurse, customize the scrubs with a pair of scissors the way you want to wear them. You could buy the a 20 cent piece of red felt from Target and carve a red cross to attach to the scrubs. With a pair of nice heels, fishnet tights, and a clipboard, you are good to go for half the price!
Looking for something less cliche perhaps? This was something I wanted to try out because it would be an innovative costume and guaranteed that no other person at the Grand or Pause will be in the same costume. Get yourself and six other friends to dress up as the seven deadly sins! Why? Because there’s no generic costume, thus you would have the leeway to spend anywhere from nothing to x.
As envy, bombard your closet and dig up any green you have. With St.Patty’s Day clothes in the back of the wardrobe, green shouldn’t be too hard to find. Ragstock sells sequin headbands in different solid colors for an affordable price. With an excess of green, you are good to go!
Greed shouldn’t be terribly difficult either. Lots of bling! If you don’t have it, a friend is bound to! Your last resort would be to spend $5 or $10 on bling at Ragstock.
Similarly, gluttony, pride, lust, wrath, and sloth would give you the opportunity to wear red (wrath), or Pajamas (sloth), or even a sexy dress (lust) to demonstrate the sins without having to dip into your Christmas Shopping or Black Friday savings!
Or, do you want to be the center of attention at the dance rocking to Super Base? Nicki Manaj will probably be a popular costume this year, but while she’s topping charts, why not dress up like her? Bright glittery eye shadow, fake eye lashes, pink wig, a shorts and tank, and you’re good to go!
I completely respect those of you who went out and bought full costumes, or are slightly more on top of costume-planning than I am. But, even after procrastinating, if I can spend less and be creative, I think it’ll be a fun 31st!
P.S. Ragstock has been used as my primary focus for affordable accessories because it’s the one store I visited and it’s walking distance from Olaf.
