Fall Fashion Forecast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hello fashionistas!

Welcome back to a new year with Her Campus and a new year on The Hill – doesn’t it feel great to be back? As we keep settling into the school year, we must also settle into a fresh season: fall! Fall is the most highly anticipated season in the fashion industry – just check out the size of the Vogue September issue if you don’t believe me! With the fashion industry busy at work creating looks for the runway, we can take inspiration from these trends and translate them to our St. Olaf street-style. Here are some trends this fall that can be easily translated into everyday-wear. Be inspired by these ideas for fall fashion 2014!

Plaid

One hot trend for fall 2014 fashion is plaid. On the runway, plaid patterns are seen on wool coats, menswear shirts, and skirts. Take this look to campus by wearing plaid flannels, plaid skirts, or scarves. I’m almost positive we all have at least one flannel in our closets, so it’s time to take them out of our closets and pair them with a solid color to accentuate the plaid pattern. Sophisticate your plaid look with a pair of sleek coated denim, or go for the laid-back look by pairing plaid with your favorite pair of jeans.

Knits

Sweaters are a staple for any fashionista’s fall wardrobe. Lucky for us, knits are very popular on the runways this season! On the runways, hues of gray, tan, and cream are popular. These sweaters can easily transition from runway to campus. Try an oversized knit paired with skinny jeans or leggings for a classic fall look. Or try a sweater with a more refined silhouette paired with a fashionable track pant for a look that is right on-trend. Your options are endless!

Emerald

The color palette for fall is full of rich and deep tones, like cranberry, teal, honey mustard, and wine. But one color in particular that is especially eye-catching and unique is deep emerald. On the runway, emerald is seen in both separates as well as in dresses. This makes emerald easily transition from the runway to campus. Try playing around with emerald as the focal color of your outfit – an emerald dress – or make emerald your accent color with a belt, a skirt, or a pair of flats, to add interest to your look.

Fur Accents

Fur accents are especially popular on the runway. Now, some of us are not so bold as to wear a full fur coat, for example, but there is no need to feel left out of this trend! Options for bringing fur into your wardrobe include vests with fur lining, fur collars on winter coats, or fur peeking out from the top of boots. Look for faux fur, not only for the sake of respect, but also because of price! Be a frugal fashionista!

Military Inspiration

The runway is filled with looks inspired by military elements. These looks are characterized by a unique structure, color and vibe. Bring this fall fashion military inspiration to campus via metal statement buttons on coats or jackets, deep colors like (you guessed it!) army green, black, navy, and camel, structured pieces like wool coats, and bomber jackets with quilted accents.

Sneakers

Sneakers are popular on the runways as well! This is one trend I am extremely excited about! Many of the sneakers seen on the runways are sleek, use innovative fabrics like quilted leather, or embrace a sporty yet refined vibe. These sneakers can be either slip-on or lace-up. Bringing these shoes from runway to campus is easy – you can simply wear your sneakers with distressed jeans and a flannel or chambray for a laid-back, cool feel, or you could spice-up your look by pairing your sneakers with a dress. Personally, I love this look for fall! Another option would be to pair your sneakers with a pair of track pants to flawlessly bring two fall trends together.

Midi-Rings

Don’t forget about fashion for your fingers! Midi-rings have been hot all summer, and they will definitely carry-over into the fall season. Not only are midi-rings delicate and dainty, but they add visual interest to your hands. Try pairing both normal rings with midi rings to embrace the trend!

There you have it, fashionistas! Fall fashion is finally here, so be inspired by these new trends seen on the runways around the world. Take these trends from the runways and translate them into looks you can wear on campus! Make St. Olaf your runway this season!

Stay fashionable, Oles!
