5 Fun Things To Do if You’re Stuck on Campus Over Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey Oles! TGIFB, right? It may seem like everyone is leaving campus and going home for the long weekend, but if you’re stuck on the hill for break, have no fear. There are plenty of fun things for you to do around town and even within the confines of your own room to make the most of your free time. Take a look at these suggestions, and have a wonderful break!

1. Go to the apple orchard.

What better way is there to celebrate fall than going to an apple orchard? Head down to Fireside Orchard & Gardens and choose from a wide variety of apples, as well as baked goods ranging from fudge and apple pies to caramel dips and apple donuts. Not in a munching mood? Grab a cup of hot cider and pick out a pumpkin to get your room in the Halloween spirit.

2. Check out a new restaurant.

Treat yourself to a nice meal at one of Northfield’s many dining establishments – it can be nice to get out of the cafeteria every now and then and check out what the town has to offer. Hit up Chapati for Indian food, El Tequila for Mexican, Tokyo Grill for some tasty sushi, and The Tavern and Ole Store for your classic American cuisine. Happy eating!

3. Have a Gilmore Girls marathon.

Yes, the rumors are true – all seven seasons of Gilmore Girls are now available on Netflix! If you haven’t already started shuffling through all of your favorite Rory and Lorelei moments, Fall Break is the perfect time to binge watch as many episodes as possible with zero interruption. Recruit some friends, put on some sweats and spend the day revisiting one of the greatest shows of all time.

4. Read a book for fun.

When was the last time any of us have had the chance to read a book purely for entertainment purposes? Head to the library and check out something that looks interesting, then kick back in a comfy chair and get lost in the wonderful world of non-academic reading. If you need a suggestion, I would recommend Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn – the movie just came out, but the book itself is an incredible read and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page has been turned.

5. Go thrift-shopping.

Start putting together a wacky Halloween costume or search for the perfect retro sweater at one of Northfield’s consignment clothing stores. Check out the Thrifty Parrot or the Clothes Closet, operated by the Community Action Center. All of the profits from sales at the Clothes Closet benefit programs supported by the Community Action Center, so you are helping the community while you shop!
