Why First-Years Should Apply for the LINC Mentor Program

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

St. Lawrence University was recently ranked to have the third best alumni network in the country, but often, students wonder how to get involved with such a fantastic alumni network. As the spring semester kicks off, first-year students have the opportunity to apply to the LINC mentor program here at St. Lawrence, and if accepted, will begin the alumni connection program the fall of their sophomore year. LINC stands for Laurentians Investing in Networking and Careers, and is great opportunity for career guidance and networking.

LINC applications are due April 9th, 2018!!!

According to the St. Lawrence University website, the LINC program was “Launched in 2013 and funded by a gift from Michael Arpey ’85, the LINC Program is designed to match sophomore students individually with a St. Lawrence alumnus/a who serves as a professional mentor. The program provides a structure for developing connections and sustaining the relationship for a year, with the goal of developing the student’s networking and industry skills as well as encouraging a longer-term mentoring relationship.”

This program is great for everyone, whether you are set on what you aspire to do in your future, or if you are exploring potential career paths, it is helpful in numerous ways. Your LINC mentor is there for you and will help you answer any questions you may have – whether you need help searching for an internship, you want someone to review your applications for jobs, resume, etc., or even if you just want someone by your side for the year to help you stay on track with goals (or even create new ones), you can’t go wrong!

Another benefit of joining this program, is the program itself offers many benefits unrelated to just communicating with a mentor. You are able to attend special panels and workshops on different topics such as cover letters and resumes, you can get free business cards made, and you can even travel to New York City for free with the program to network at a variety of sites!

To all first-year students out there: I highly encourage you to apply, it is a remarkable experience that has changed so many students perspectives and led them to success, including mine. Don’t miss out on such a great opportunity!

Hi everyone! I'm Kristen! I am a Performance and Communications arts and Psychology double major, and plan to one day hold a career in the public relations field. On campus, some of my favorite things to do are get chai lattes at the bookstore, run the nearby trails, head into town for some kombucha, or hang out at my sorority house with my friends!
