It’s that time of year again–full of spooky costumes, candy, and scary movies. One of my favorite traditions that I have is to watch one or two scary movies a weekend with my friends. Since there are so many scary movies, here are my recommended five that you should definitely watch.

Alien (1979)

Space. A small crew. Something coming on board and taking out crewmates one by one. What about this movie isn’t tense? Sigourney Weaver stars as Ellen Ripley, a badass engineer whose ingenuity and quick-thinking may be the only thing that keeps her alive.

John Carpenter’s “The Thing” (1982)

Similar to Alien, The Thing centers around a crew of men that are infiltrated by an outside source. Unsure of who to believe, the trust between them begins to erode, as rescue is not coming and they are picked off one-by-one. I also forgot to mention: they are in Antarctica, and winter is approaching. With great tension and amazing acting from stars like Kurt Russell, The Thing will stick in your mind long after you’ve turned off the screen.

Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A classic film about teenagers haunted by a man who can kill them in their dreams. As if not getting enough sleep was scary enough. Freddie Krueger is an iconic villain whose sharp-clawed hand and heavily scarred face are.

Get Out (2017)

A more recent horror film that took the world by storm. Not everything is as it seems for a man and his girlfriend when they go to visit her parents. It is a tense film with mind-blowing scenes, hypnotism, and subtle yet powerful commentary on racial ignorance and intolerance. As contemporary horror films have a reputation for being not as scary, Get Out definitely does not suffer that same fate.

A Quiet Place (2018)

The sound design in this movie is out of this world. The complete silence ratchets up my nerves each time, my ears straining for any noise. John Krasinski’s film is beautiful yet haunting, with each new scene leaving the viewer worried about how much sound is being made.

There are so many good horror films out there, it’d be hard to talk about them all. Whatever movie (s) you choose, be sure to have a bowl of popcorn and your favorite Halloween candy with you. It wouldn’t do to be hungry while you’re scared.
