Tips for Staying Safe on Campus at SLU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Although St. Lawrence is located in Upstate New York, it’s important to remember that your safety should be your primary concern regardless of your location. It is easy to let your guard down when you see innocent and friendly parts of our community, such as a horse and buggy ‘parked’ at the supermarket, but crime can happen anywhere. That is why it is important to learn about some tools to help keep you safe, as well as learn about the resources we have here at SLU.

1. Whenever possible, try to avoid walking home at night alone! If you see that girl from your English class leaving the Ticker late at night, ask if you can join her! Odds are that she would love the company as well! If you feel uncomfortable with that, don’t hesitate to call and locate a friend so you can walk home together. If neither of the two options are applicable, you can always call a friend and just have them talk to you on the phone until you’re back in your dorm. Any sort of company is better than nothing, so don’t hesitate to meet someone new walking back or call a friend, both are better than walking alone!

2. Whether you’re downtown or on campus, safe walks are also a great resource for SLU students. You can call security at any time of the day or night and they will send a security officer to meet and walk with you to your destination. This number is located on the back of all student IDs. But just in case, it’s also helpful to enter this number into your phone!

Safe Walk– On Campus: 229-5555

Safe Walk– Downtown: 323-7831

3. One of the most important tips is to listen to your gut. If you feel uncomfortable or in some kind of danger, it’s better to play it safe and call a friend or call security. SLU security is here to ensure our safety so don’t worry if it’s late at night or early in the morning; their job is to keep us safe!
