Music is something that is an absolute necessity in my life, and I spend lots of time looking for new music or videos throughout each week. I love learning more about each artist, watching them interact with other artists, listening to their thought process behind songs, or just anything that pertains to their life and how they came to be where they are today. This past summer and fall, I discovered some videos that I found really fun to watch, and acquired more music from. I wanted to share my top three, and hope some of the music lovers reading this, find the time to check them out!

  1. Dreamville. This is my ALL TIME favorite music video/documentary. The video is only thirty minutes long and… it’s free on YouTube! So I mean, why wouldn’t you check it out? Dreamville is a group of rappers/R&B artists that came together in the span of ten days, to work day and night on their recent album “Revenge of the Dreamers III”. Throughout the video, you get an inside look on the process of making the album, and what the experience was like to have so many artists in one house, collaborating with different people every day, and constantly creating music. The group is led by J. Cole, along with key members like, J.I.D., EARTHGANG, Ari Lennox, Bas, Cozz, Smino, and many more. Admittingly, I’ve watched it four times already, and continue to be entertained each time. The music is incredible, and it’s amazing to see how talented and hard working these artists are. If you can’t find the time to watch the documentary, at least check out the album. There is a wide variety of songs, each including a group of different artists. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

  1. Whack World Album Video. This music video is only sixteen minutes long and… free on YouTube again! This is Tierra Whack’s music video for her entire album, which consists of sixteen songs that are all exactly one minute long. Her music is a funky, weird form of R&B and rap, which is further emphasized in the music video. The songs on her album flow easily with each other, just as the images in her video does. One of her songs is called “Pet Cemetery” about her dog going to heaven, another named “Bugs Life”, and some others are just as strange. But the music is so good, and like her video, really unique and unlike anything other artists have done. If you don’t feel like branching out a bit to watch the video, try listening to at least a few of her songs (if not all), it’ll only take a minute or two of your day!

  1. The Cave, or Kenny Beats. Again, the videos are free on YouTube! I’m hoping that factor makes you more inclined to go watch the content. Kenny Beats is a music producer that owns a YouTube channel, where he invites artists (mainly rappers and R&B artists) to freestyle for a few minutes. Each artist comes into his studio, chats with Kenny describing their mood, and explains what kind of beat they would like to work with. In roughly ten minutes, Kenny then creates a beat based on their requests, and the artists record their freestyle for a few minutes. Not only is it interesting to see how Kenny and the artists interact, but it’s fun to hear the final product after also having seen their process.  Hopefully, some of you will find the time to watch these videos, or at least explore the artists mentioned. I find music to be so much more meaningful and interesting when we get to see the work and passion each artist has put into their work. It’s astonishing how talented and creative these artists are, and I hope you enjoy discovering this through my video suggestions!
