Mama Mia 2: Here We Go Again Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Mama Mia 2: Here We Go Again, released ten years after the first Mama Mia, lived up to the high bar set by the original film and added a new twist that is relevant to the here and now. The film takes you on a journey of how young recent college graduate Donna traveled Europe and found love, and with that heartbreak, while flashing forward to the present at which she has passed away and her daughter, Sophie, is pregnant and remodeling the island Donna loved so much.

First of all, we must address the elephant in the room because the film surely did not; the death of Donna. The one thing that bothered me about this film was that Donna had died and that there was no explanation for it. I sat there wondering how this happened and it distracted me from the movie.

Secondly, there are mixed reviews about the soundtrack. For me, at first, I was not the biggest fan of the new ABBA songs in this film because I had not heard many of them before. For example, at the moment, I was thrown off that the first song of the film was “When I kissed the Teacher,” but now I jam out to that song at least once a day. Overall, at first I was not the biggest fan of the soundtrack of the movie but after listening to it on repeat for a month or two I couldn’t be a bigger fan.

The cast was star-studded and fit their roles perfectly. I loved how Cher made an appearance as Sophie’s grandmother and that the movie concluded with the entire cast singing songs. In addition, those who played a younger version of the older characters, such as Lily James as young Donna, made a perfect cast.

Overall, this movie embodies joy and wonder! If you have not seen it already, I highly recommend that everyone should see this film. It will guarantee to make you smile!
