How To Get Through a Long Distance Breakup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

So you’re 1,000 miles away and you thought everyone was wrong about the distance? You were planning to move across the world (or country) to be with someone, but the Facebook Messenger chats became shorter and shorter? And now you realize that being in a long distance relationship can be one of the hardest experiences you’ll ever have. Now you’re terrified of the thought that you will never see this person ever again. Whether your summer fling went on for a little too long, or you and your high school sweetheart have taken different paths than you expected, a long distance breakup may seem like the end of the world, but it is not. Here’s how to deal:

Let everything out – Take out your rainy-day playlist and belt your heart out to however many Adele, The Lumineers, Ne-Yo, and Ed Sheeran songs it takes to feel like you’re not holding anything back. If you need to cry, cry. If you need to yell, YELL!

Stay away from social media – The only way you connected with this person in between short in-person visits was probably through social media. Take a step away from checking their Facebook profile, their Instagram, and their SnapChat stories for a little while.

Distract yourself – So now that you can’t check all your apps for signs of your ex-partner moving on, what should you do? Find the things that made you happy before your relationship and do them. The best relationship you will ever have is with yourself.

  • Get your gym routine back on track and let out your energies.

  • Get back to going crazy on DIY projects.

  • Catch up on your favorite t.v show series.

  • EAT!

Embrace the change – Change can be difficult. Sometimes, the best thing to do is accept experiences as a chance to learn and to grow. Try changing up your surroundings:

  • Rearrange your room.

  • Let go of all that remains of your partner out of your space.

  • Buy some new posters or maybe a bean bag chair.

  • Try something new with your hair or makeup.

  • Meet new people! (it’s easier than it sounds)

  • Get outside. Fresh air will work wonders.

Friends are key – Sometimes all you need is your amazingly crazy friends to make you laugh.

  • Gather all your gals and go on a weekend trip.

  • Go to your friend’s room and watch your favorite movies.

  • Pack on all the glitter you have and have a G.N.O.

Finally,

Repeat after me: I WILL BE OKAY. I AM COOL, CALM, AND COLLECTED. THERE WILL SOMEONE BETTER FOR ME IN THE FUTURE.

HCXO!
