Throughout this semester, I have been involved in preparing for a mock student government presidential election for my American Politics course. Our assignment for the class started when we were divided into groups to form our own political parties to support our chosen campaign leader. Since then, our groups have been hard at work, collecting signatures, designing and directing advertisements, seeking endorsements from various organizations and professors on campus, and preparing for a major final debate before our class election. This class has pushed each of our limits, testing our skills of persuasion and ability to network throughout the school. With the course beginning to wrap up, we are faced with arguably one of the most daunting challenges in the course yet: convincing students to come vote for our candidate.Â
By voting in our election, you are solidifying future interest in this course, which is very important to keep this course running. Outside of our election preparation, we have also been discussing the history of politics in America, which is crucial to understanding our system of politics today. This knowledge is essential to making knowledgeable decisions when voting in our local and national elections, so voting in this election is key to making sure our electorate at St. John’s is informed and ready to vote in our actual elections.Â
Alongside this, the topics for discussion for each of our campaigns are based on actual problems that students face at St. John’s. Topics such as affordability, safety, diversity and accessibility are at the forefront of all of our discussions, including our debate, so taking the time to listen to what each candidate presents as a solution is also helpful for sparking a discussion among students about issues that affect all of us.Â
I highly encourage anyone reading this article to take the time and research each of my class’s candidates and come vote on December 8th in Marillac 309. Although this isn’t a real election, the discussions we are having are real and essential to spotlight at our school.Â
