A Social Media Detox Can Do the Mind Justice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter.

Have you ever gotten overwhelmed by all the negative things you come across on social media? If you find the answer to this is yes, then a social media cleanse can be a great way to remove yourself from the negativity.

Since the development of social media, it has risen in popularity; leaving a lot of individuals to incorporate it into their daily routines. These platforms of media are often used as outlets for people to pass the time. As the number of followers continues to increase, the ugly truths behind social media can cause a decline in mental health.

Most generations today can’t live without social media. The fascination has led to public perception being altered and an individual’s mood can be influenced. When you review a post on social media, specific emotions are evoked depending on the story being told.

Also, the power of technology we have at our disposal can cause irreversible damage that leaves people living in a reality that is surrounded by fake news. Furthermore, an individual’s sleep pattern can be disrupted due to the overuse of social media. This is not a healthy habit because your body needs sleep to replenish itself.

In today’s society, individuals tend to hide behind screens so that they don’t have to form relationships through face-to-face contact. When you use social media platforms like these, it can also become a distraction that deters you from getting things done. You experience detrimental eye strain by staring at a phone screen for hours. As you take the courage to let go of these bad habits it gives your mental health a chance to thrive.

In the society we live in today, our duty as humans is to ensure that our mental health doesn’t decline. We must separate ourselves from triggers that can bring us back to a dark place we just fought to escape. Social media is a fun outlet that has the power to cause a significant shift in individuals whose mental health appears to be healthy. This is why we should make mental health a priority that is protected at all costs. As you take a cleanse from social media you can live a healthier life.
