5 St. John’s Clubs You Need To Join

Stephanie Maceiko Student Contributor, St. John's University
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. John's chapter and does not reflect the views of Her Campus.

If you’re a St. John’s student who’s looking to get more involved on campus, or an incoming student wanting to know more about what our school has to offer,  this article is for you. Joining organizations on campus is such a vital part of the college experience, and a must-do to have an enjoyable time while on campus. Here are some of my favorite clubs at St. John’s, what they entail and why you should join them!

  1. Her Campus (duh!): Alright, I can admit this may be a little bit biased, but truly, this club has been the most accepting, welcoming and comforting club I ever come across. They really just instill the sense of sisterhood and bonding through bringing together the community of women on campus. From their fun and creative general body meetings (GBMs) like Sol de Janiero giveaways, bracelet making and ornament decorating- it’s always a fun time with Her Campus. They also provide an outlet and publication for writers like me to freely express their thoughts and their work through their platform through a healthy and comfortable experience with our amazing editors, Katera and Alexandra.
  2. Project Sunshine: Another club I belong to, one that is low commitment, calming and a great way to give back. This club is all about giving back to children in local hospitals by putting together sensory craft kits for the kids to receive. These kits are made during their meetings and so therapeutic to put together. Even when they’re not doing a meeting centered around those kits, there is always a creative project that directly goes back to the kids who need it the most. I love spending just an hour a month with them to do my part in giving back and spend time with others who are passionate in doing the same. Another great opportunity they provide is the opportunity to become a hospital volunteer by being a consistent member of their organization.
  3. WSJU Radio: Our school is a grateful recipient of iHeart Radio, who happened to donate our very own radio station. There, you can either get your own hour a week for yourself to have a podcast, do a show or just play your favorite music. It is a super chill and relaxing part of my week. If you want to get into sports broadcasting, this is also the place for you, as WSJU has premium access to all St. John’s games and gives you the opportunity to broadcast them through our radio services.
  4. Marketing Club: Although I am not a member, nor have I attended a meeting, their presence and involvement on campus is undeniable. They are constantly providing opportunities for students to learn about the marketing industry, how to market themselves and prepare students for professional settings by building their skills. The resources, opportunities and people within this club can truly help students become well-versed in professional marketing settings.
  5. Badminton Club: A club I occasionally attend is Badminton Club. Here, you can casually enjoy a game of badminton for about two hours every Monday and Friday in the Taffner Field House. Similar to Project Sunshine, the commitment is very low and is a place to go to when you just want a break from academics and just want to have fun. I’ve always enjoyed playing badminton with my friends at this club and it is a great way for me to cool off for the week and let loose before the weekend begins.

I hope you can find your place and your people here at St. John’s, whether it’s at these clubs or any of our 180+ clubs on campus. Finding community is such a comforting feeling as a college student, especially when you are a new student — participating in clubs truly helps alleviate the transition.

Originally from Maryland but now studying in NYC, Stephanie Maceiko is a freshman studying Government and Politics and minoring in Marketing at the St. John's University chapter. After graduation, she hopes to return home to the Maryland-DC area to work with politicians, pursue lobbying and eventually, one day, run for office. For the chapter, she has written about music, movies, politics and aspects of the life of a female college student. She hopes to write pieces that not only gives her a voice, but also finds the readers who enjoy and need to hear about what she discusses in her pieces. In her free time, she likes to listen to music, watch movies, photography, traveling, and go to concerts. If you have any comments or suggestions for her pieces, feel free to email her at stephaniemaceiko@gmail.com or hit her up on instagram @444.ssteph !
