Feminism is at a peak in the year 2016, and the music scene has established a good amount of female artists in recent years. From big names like Taylor Swift, to more obscure bands such as Girlpool, female artists are absolutely slaying, all while promoting feminism within their character. Here are a few rad acts with a strong female personality that should be appreciated.

1. HAIM- They’re three sisters with the same hair style, and the same fire for promoting girl power. Seriously, just go watch one of their music videos. Also, they befriended Taylor Swift and adopted her into their squad.

2. Tacocat- 3/4 members in this band are girls. The guitar player is a guy, but since he played for a band whose hit song was “Crimson Wave,” it suggests that he’s a feminist as well.

3. Banks- Banks is known for calling the ladies at her shows “queens,” and praising feminism at her concerts. You’ll fall in love with her, I promise.

4. Chastity Belt– This band from Seattle will undoubtedly empower you with their feminist songs. Their entire essence screams girl power.

5. Misterwives– Lead singer Mandy Lee will enhance her girl power by doing push ups on stage and giving a wild performance.

6. Girlpool- This drumless duo rocks out as much as a bigger band would. The girls perform with such an energy that’ll undoubtedly have you singing along.

7. La Luz- These gals will be at Levitation fest in Austin at the end of May! Make sure you catch one of their performances sometime to witness their girl power.

8. Honeyblood-  If you’re into a foreign girl band, this one’s for you! The Scottish girls exemplify how feminism is worldwide.

9. Best Coast- Bethany Cosentino is covered in tattoos and flaunts her stuff on social media, but she also slays on stage and you’ll come to appreciate her angelic vocals.

10. Hinds- Punk rock isn’t just for guys, punk rock girls are also pretty hot. Not giving a care and jamming out as hard as any guy band would, Hinds encompasses a feminist approach to music with a Spanish twist.

Make sure to check these girls out and listen to some new music. And as always, get excited about feminism!!!

St Edward's

I'm one of the two campus correspondents for St. Edward's University! I am a sophomore Communication major with a focus on PR and Advertising, and I love writing. I am a senior staff member on Topper Radio where I host a radio show and manage the staff blog. In the future I hope to pursue a career in the music industry doing PR for a quality music label/music representation or icon. Living in Austin has allowed me to grow in the presence of great venues, artists, and festivals. I'm also an RA for LeMans hall, and in my free time I love going to shows, hanging out at coffee shops, and doing a variety of spontaneous activities.
