Lets face it, in St Andrews, we are seeing far more rain than sun nowadays. Somehow, I was shocked to see that people don’t wear wellies as much as they should. Welly Ball is such a staple event in St Andrews and I know many people have bought wellies only to wear them out for one night a year.

But honestly, our wellies deserve more than that! This is a guide on how to style your wellies on a daily basis because they should be a wardrobe essential here, not a once-a-year accessory.

My Favourite Wellies

First things first, there is more than one wellie brand worth knowing. While Hunter, Barbour, Aigle, and Le Chameau tend to be the most popular, each brand brings something a little different to the table. I grew up with Hunter wellies, so I’ll admit that I’m loyal to them, they’re classic and reliable and work pretty much with everything.

The traditional wellie usually sits halfway up the calf, which is perfect for a standard rainy day and for a muddy walk around town. Lately though, I’ve been seeing some really cute short wellies which feel a bit more modern and are great if you want something that’s easier to style with everyday outfits. I see less Le Chameau wellies around town but every time I do I’m reminded how gorgeous they are, definitely a more understated choice if you want something unique. Aigle also has a beautiful Parcours angled wellie that is really flattering!

Uses for Wellies

One of my favorite things to do while walking in the rain is to fully commit and walk straight through puddles instead of awkwardly jumping to avoid them, and wellies make that possible. They are designed to get wet, muddy, and a little messy, and the best part is how easy they are to clean. Even if they are covered in mud, a quick rinse does the job (I once saw someone just walk into the ocean to clean them off).

Beyond jumping in puddles, wellies are super practical for more outdoorsy activities too. I wear mine when going skeet/trap shooting and hunting, where waterproof and sturdy footwear really matter. They’re comfortable, durable, and can handle rough terrain. Whether you’re trekking across muddy fields or just trying to survive a rainy walk to class, wellies quietly get the job done.

How to style your wellies for Everyday wear

Wellies are surprisingly versatile, and once you stop thinking of them as just functional, they become much easier to style. Pairing them with a skirt is one of the simplest ways to make them feel intentional rather than thrown on at the last minute. Both maxi and mini skirts work really well for this, Maxi skirts give off an effortless countryside chic vibe, while a mini keeps things playful.

My personal favourite way to style wellies with a skirt is with a maxi skirt paired with a fitted t-shirt and a matching sweater or jacket. There is something I really love about the skirt slightly overlapping the top of the wellies. It makes the outfit feel relaxed rather than overly styled.

If you are more in the mood for trousers, wellies work just as well with pants. I usually style them with the trousers rolled up, but leaving them down works too depending on the look you’re going for. Jeans and khakis are classic choices, and tucking your trousers into your wellies is not only practical but very much part of the look. It keeps your hems dry and gives off an outdoorsy, put together feel even if you are just running to class.

Colour also makes a huge difference. You get extra points if you can colour coordinate your wellies with the rest of your outfit ;). My favourite colour is green, so naturally my wellies are green, I usually pair them with my green Barbour jacket or my green rain jacket to match. While black wellies are timeless, there is nothing wrong with being bold. Bright colours can make any outfit more fun, so do not be afraid to rock classic yellow wellies or even something more unique! I have also seen people absolutely pull off shiny red wellies

Accessorizing your Wellies

One of the easiest ways to elevate a wellie outfit is by adding wellie socks. These are knit liners that peek out over the top of your boots, and they instantly make the look feel more thought-through. They add warmth and a cozy feel that works perfectly in St Andrews weather. You can even match the brand of your socks to your boots if you want everything to feel cohesive. Hunter, Barbour, and Le Chameau all sell wellie socks designed to pair with their boots.

Beyond looking cute, wellie socks are genuinely practical. They add warmth on colder days and make wellies more comfortable for longer walks. If you are someone who is always cold, this accessory is a game changer.

Another easy way to style wellies is by wearing long socks that show slightly above the top of the boot. This works especially well with skirts or dresses and adds a playful, layered element to the outfit. Ribbed socks, wool socks, or even patterned ones can all work depending on the vibe you’re going for.

Accessories like socks may seem small, but they make a big difference. These little details help turn wellies into part of the outfit rather than just something you wear because it’s raining.

Making Wellies a Daily Essential

At the end of the day, wellies are one of the most practical and underrated staples for life in St Andrews, and they deserve a place in your everyday wardrobe. When styled with intention and a bit of personality, they stop being just a rainy day necessity and become a confident, functional part of your personal style.
