This Week We Love: The OC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

This semester we have rekindled our love for The OC, an American drama set in Orange County, California. Imogen and I decided to re-watch every episode starting from season one, back in the days when Ryan was the bad-boy from Chino and Marissa was just ‘the girl next door.’ After watching one really juicy episode, Lucy joined the OC crew, and the three of us meet in Imogen’s room most nights to watch an episode or two.

The characters seem to spend most of their time sipping champagne at glitzy parties, celebrating every holiday in luxury hotels or on yachts. However, these events never run smoothly, usually ending with a shocking revelation about one of the characters’ love lives or with Ryan punching someone. We’ve noticed how much style has changed over the years, Marissa often wearing strange outfits such as bootcut jeans with dresses or long sleeved crop tops (something a modern-day Marissa Cooper wouldn’t be caught dead in), while Summer works high school chic in denim skirts and pastel tops.

Seth Cohen, Ryan’s geeky, witty best friend, is my favourite character, the caption ‘I don’t care if he’s a fictional character, I still want to marry him’ coming to mind every time I see those sexy curls. He is also romantic, naming a boat after his girlfriend (admittedly before they started going out) and publicly declaring his love for her on top of the kissing booth. With lines like ‘It’s always been you Summer, it’s always been you’, it’s no wonder girls love him. If you’re ever in University Hall’s Old Wing and hear us singing ‘California’ by ‘Phantom Planet’, the show’s theme song, you’ll know not to disturb.
