Just because Freshers’ week is over doesn’t mean we have to lose the excitement it brings! For some unknown reason I decided to try as many new things as possible this year: Mermaids, Women’s Rugby, Archery, Bubble TV, Inklight, working (money is nice!) and bicycle riding. So far, one week in, I am loving life. I’ve only worked one shift at my job, I haven’t gotten into any plays (despite auditioning for more than I’d like to admit), there have only been two Rugby practices, and I haven’t actually gotten around to Archery, Bubble TV, or Inklight, but that’s beside the point; I’m having fun!
We should never stop seeking out new experiences. University is only four short years, and as a third year I’ve already lost two of those. After this, I don’t know what happens: I might end up in a real persons job, I might end up in a post-graduate program, or I might end up in a ditch. But for right now, I’m here. I am currently content in knowing that I’m going to make the most of the time that I have left, by actively shaping my life the way I want to, and taking ownership of myself and my time.
And that is my challenge to all of our readers for this week—try something new. Stretch yourself beyond where you thought was possible: sign up to go white water rafting, ask a cute guy out for coffee, take a dance class—whatever will make you happy and take you out of your comfort zone, do it. Even if it’s only once, it’s a story and it’s an adventure, and maybe it’s a new passion. And now, to end on a super cheesy note, I close with a quote by the French philosopher Denis Diderot, “Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things.” Good luck St Andrews!
