The St Andrews Day Ball

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

The 30th November was the very famous St Andrews Day, even Google had a doodle celebrating it! Living in St A – the day definitely lived up to its expectations.

From fireworks to local stalls to candle light processions, St A had it all! It even had a St Andrews Day ball organised by the Post Graduate Society that a lot of students here use as a Graduation ball for those graduating earlier in the day.

A couple of my friends and I decided to head on over to the Ball- I mean why not celebrate the day the best way we know how i.e. dressing up in a pretty LBD and drinking away our body’s weight in wine at the included wine reception?

The Ball was at the Old Course Hotel, and never having been there before I was pleasantly surprised at how they had transformed the ballroom. There was a red carpet rolled out at the front door with waiters welcoming the guests with a glass of red or white wine – the white wine was quite popular among my friends and I… a bit too popular and free flowing two hours in though! Owl Eyes had a photo booth with props that we could use once we were comfortable enough to start goofing around – in fact in the photo album gallery online the first pictures were all serious red carpet style posing but as the night and wine progressed pictures started getting funnier and more moustache-y!Janetta’s ice-cream was a lovely and welcoming touch along with the ceilidh that lasted for about two hours and had most people joining in – voluntarily or not. A friend and I were singled out to join because there was a couple missing for a full group for the Flying Scotsman, and while at first I was hesitant to join in but eventually after kicking off my heels half way through I thought ‘ what is a St.Andrews Day Ball without some embarrassing ceilidh-ing moves on my part? ‘After the ceilidh finished, there were DJS how brought us the likes of The Killers and Nicki Minaj, a great contrast to the previous set of songs!

Overall it was a great night where wine was drunk, friendships were strengthened, new crushes were born and happily ever after moments were the norm of the night! Until next year’s Ball!
