DanceSoc is a 290-strong member society that runs around 18 weekly classes in many different dance styles and levels, for a yearly membership fee of ÂŁ10. The academic year culminates in a fantastic show at the Byre Theatre, with every class putting on a piece of dance. 180 members took part last year for our global-themed ‘Beyond the Horizon’ show, which sold out every night!
We offer classes in ballet, breakdance, contemporary, highland, hip-hop, irish, jazz, lyrical, tap and theatre, and also have an auditioned dance team, the Blue Angels, who compete regularly in national and international competitions. The Angels had tremendous success at events last year, including winning two gold medals at the World Championships in Eastbourne.
Each year, DanceSoc nominates a charity to fundraise for. 2011/2012 saw us raising money for Arts4Dementia, a charity which works with mental health and care teams around the UK to set up creative projects for people living with dementia and their carers. We raised over ÂŁ200 through bake sales and a 1950s-themed Evening of Dance ball.
We have two brilliant Freshers’ Week events on Saints Sport Wednesday (12th September)! Why not come along to our give-it-a-go session in the Activities Room at the Sports Centre, and try out some of our classes, free?
