It goes without saying that 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, and we have all done well just to get through it. That said, those running their own businesses have been hit extremely hard. It is likely that the Boxing Day sales this year will be out in full force, given that high street shopping has been minimal this year. However, if you’re planning on splashing out on Boxing Day, you might want to consider supporting a small business owner rather than the usual fast fashion and chain shopping. If you’re not sure where to look, here are some ideas to get you started.

Firstly, if you would like some accessories to sparkle into the new year, why not treat yourself to some jewellery? Asa Artshop is a black owned, UK based jewellery business, with free delivery to the UK. If you have an earring obsession like I do, your desires will be fully satisfied. Delicate but glamorous, this jewellery will get you compliments anywhere you go. For some handmade silver jewellery, I recommend Silver By Swan. This business creates jewellery with names or initials on bracelets, necklaces and rings. They also create birthstone jewellery – perfect to add a splash of colour to an outfit. Take a look at their items if you like dainty accessories, but with a personal touch!

As well as accessories, you might wish to make purchases to brighten up your home’s atmosphere. If you’ve loved your Christmas candles and want one for all year round, have a look at Lilac Candle Co. This business prides itself on making vegan, non-toxic, sustainable soy wax candles. With scents ranging from ‘Bulgarian Rose’ to ‘Coffee’, you’re sure to find something to your liking! Continuing with the aromatic theme, Silk Roads Soap is a business based in Birmingham, UK. They sell scrubs, bath bombs, and soaps with the most beautiful decorative patterns. Better yet, all are vegan and free from plastic. Buy something from here and your bathroom will feel luxurious all year long.

Moving away from perfumed goods, you may wish to buy something to brighten up your bedroom or living room. If so, I recommend Snoring Dori’s embroidery art. Specialising in hoop art, this business embroiders with such intricate detail; it will automatically make your surroundings feel cosy. If you’d like a print to hang up on your wall, I suggest Gylo Illustrations. With some lovely line art illustrations, these prints are an elegant yet fun addition to any wall. Another unique business is Anec Doodles. Each print can be personalised to you, so whether you want to treat yourself, or buy something in preparation for a parent’s birthday, this company has you covered. Let them know your memories, moments, or facts and they will create a design bespoke to you! This business is incredibly original and any purchase will undoubtedly be treasured for life. Lastly for wall decoration, Laura Robertson makes some fun, often animal-themed, prints to add some colour to your life. She also makes cards if you have any birthdays or other occasions coming up in the New Year.

Lastly, once Christmas is over and you are getting prepared to start back at university, some office supplies might be needed for encouragement. Night Navy stationery creates personalised items for you. Let them know your initials and they will be added onto a sleek, classy notebook or keyring. With subtle tones, any purchase from here will give you the energy to get into business mode. If you wish to add some joy to your reading, I recommend Little and Large Creations Ltd. With free UK delivery, this business handmakes resin bookmarks amongst other pieces. Add a flowery feel to your work for some motivation!

I hope these ideas have given some inspiration as to how you can support small businesses now, and in the New Year. I have tried to include items which range in price so you can help small businesses, whatever your budget. Business owners work hard to produce the perfect creation, and it is so worthwhile to support such unique ideas. Stay safe and happy shopping!
