One of my favourite things in the world is a nice pair of high heels. Sadly I have found little occasion to wear my heels since coming to St Andrews. Bar the occasional ball, and one or two nights out, we live in a town of flats.

This option may be safer, heels and cobblestones aren’t always the best combination, but it does make life a little less exciting. The question is: How do we wear heels without looking like we are vastly overdressed for the occasion?

1. Daytime Heels: heels with a daytime outfit are a great way to dress up a casual outfit. Wear with jeans and a silk blouse, or a simple dress and tights combo. This look may not be appropriate for an all day library session, but if you have a lunch with a friend, a meeting with your tutor, or a coffee date, heels will strike the right balance in your outfit between classy and casual.

2. Heeled Boots/Booties: Heeled boots and booties are more accepted in St Andrews for a variety of occasions. Unlike normal heels, they are appropriate for a library session since they are more casual, and usually have a lower heel. They can also be a comfortable but cute option for a day full of lectures. Booties are a great option for night, they keep your feet warmer than flats and make any outfit a little bit more rock and roll.

3. Heels at Night: Go for it. If you are confident that you look great and aren’t overdressed then no one can say anything. A few tips: make the rest of your outfit a bit more casual than normal, make sure you can walk in them for long periods of time, and wear with a smile!

Next time I see you, I hope you’re wearing heels!
