Being 5’10” has not always been ideal when shopping for cute and trendy clothes. Pants are always too short, cropped tops fall in a weird spot, and short dresses aren’t even an option. I’ve had major crash-outs because shopping in person rarely ends up successful. But, through trial and error, I have found some brands and strategies that prove more successful than others. Here are my everyday fashion tips for tall girls:
- Try it on in person, order online
Specifically for finding pants, this has been the most helpful trick that I’ve found. I’ll go shopping and find a pair of jeans or sweats in a store that I love. I’ll make sure that the waist size fits, and then go online and order the tall option. Not all stores offer a tall option online, though, which leads me to my next tip.
- Stick to brands you know will have tall options
My favorite brands with tall options for pants are Hollister, Aerie/American Eagle, and Buckle. Hollister is my favorite brand for jeans; the tall length is perfect, and the “low-rise baggy” cut is super trendy and comfortable. Aerie is a great place for the “athleisure” look; they have cute leggings and yoga pants. American Eagle and Buckle, like Hollister, are both great places for jeans. I have found that American Eagle jeans feel a little cheaper and wear out a little faster than Buckle or Hollister, so I would look there last (their tops are super cute, though!).
- Aim for proportion
As a general rule for all of my outfits, I try to aim for proportionality over anything else. Sticking to low/mid-rise jeans prevents my legs from looking way longer than my torso, and choosing a longer shirt helps prevent that super short torso look. I have also found that chunkier shoes generally look better and keep my outfit balanced.Â
- Always check the inseam length
When buying pants or shorts, always always check the inseam length! I need a 35” inseam for all my pants, and like a 5” inseam for shorts. Before I buy “tall” length pants or a pair of shorts, I have gotten in the habit of always checking the inseam length. A 33” or 34” just won’t cut it.Â
- Importance of accessories
Regardless of height, accessorizing always adds the finishing touches. Jewelry, scarves, jackets, glasses, bags, etc., never fail to elevate any outfit. So, if you’re feeling like your everyday outfits are lacking something special, add some accessories!
- Have confidence
Tall women have a tendency to shrink themselves because of how they stand out. But any outfit is made all the better with confidence and good posture. Keep your shoulders back and head high, you’re meant to stand out!Â
