Valentine’s Day. The most dreadful “holiday” to exist. The day where every social media post reminds you that you don’t have a significant other. Or where pink and red dominates your feed. Another picture, another ‘will you be my Valentine’ quote, and another partner appreciation post. But before you let the day of love get to you, this is just a brief reminder that Valentine’s day isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.

Beyond the surface of the “lovey-dovey” heart themed day, Valentine’s day is truly just a commercial holiday in hopes of selling heart chocolates and roses to make money.

For the first time in a couple years, I’m not in a relationship for Valentine’s Day, meaning no added stress of planning, gifting, or putting energy into anyone but myself. A truly single Valentine’s day. A breath of fresh air, where the lovin’ this year is all about myself.

So will I be purchasing something heart-shaped? Yes of course! Is it for someone else? Absolutely not. Will I wallow in my single-ness? Not one bit.

Don’t get me wrong, it is totally valid to be sad or feel a little empty on Valentine’s Day. But this year, I’m choosing to look at the glass half full.

This year, I’ve decided to take time to love and appreciate myself. A little mix of self-care, self-love, and a shameless evening of pasta and chocolate.

For so long, I’ve felt like I’m waiting around for the “perfect guy to try and find me,” as Olivia Rodrigo says. But what’s the point of waiting around and wasting precious moments where I can appreciate myself, single in all.

Sometimes it feels like if you’re single you’re not doing life right. Or if you’re in a relationship you’re missing out on single life. The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side.

There can be a huge amount of pressure regarding our love-life and relationship status.

But, sorry 2021 romantic comedies, I will not be wallowing in my singleness and getting fomo this year. There’s simply nothing wrong with being single. It is a relief!

Valentine’s day 2021 is for YOU. It’s for YOU to binge some candy and celebrate yourself. Don’t wait around for Single’s Awareness Day on the 15th for yourself. Make the 14th YOUR day.  Give yourself some love whether that looks like getting a  heart-shaped pizza, your favorite treat, a nice relaxing bath, or anything else you love! You know yourself more than any partner  would. So, go be your OWN Valentine and treat yourself.
