Summer is fast-approaching and Static Signals plan to make their mark on the music scene as they gear up to record their self-produced EP album. Formed late 2011, from the Welsh Valleys of Chepstow the group has certainly made an impact on the public as their gigs have taken them around the UK. The band currently has two singles out at the moment, which are available to download from their official Facebook page. Her Campus chats to frontman Andy Davies to find out more…

Which societies are you a part of?

Music is my biggest passion in life so I make sure I get my fix! I’m currently vice president of the music production society at the University of Southampton, as well as the live music soc, indie & alternative soc and, until very recently, I was heavily involved with the snow-sports society as a ski racer…

Tell us a bit more about your band, Static Signals

I’d probably describe our genre as a mix of post-grunge and pop-rock (think Foo Fighters meets The Killers)… I’d definitely say we’ve found a sound of our own.

What is it like balancing your music career with your degree?

It’s tough. Really tough. With my band being back home in south Wales and me here at uni in Southampton for most of the year, it’s extremely difficult to get anything done, which is why we only have two finished singles at the moment. A distance relationship with the band isn’t without its “artistic disagreements” over Facebook too which can be quite straining for us.

What is the weirdest situation that you have encountered since being in Southampton?

Well quite recently I found out that one of my mates from the live music society is in fact married to a girl I went out with in year 9! It was quite bizarre when she appeared at a jam session and a tad awkward, to say the least haha.

Most embarrassing moment of your time at University

That would have to be during the week after my Freshers’ Week where I got horrendously drunk and ended up sleeping with someone who, I was told the next day by a mate in the snow-sports society, was actually 9 years older than me… Not my proudest of moments!

Who is your celebrity crush?

Dave Grohl. What can I say, he’s just a babe! We’re allowed to have man-crushes right? Oh, and Charlie Simpson; who could resist those eyebrows…

If you had to take one item to a desolate island, what would it be?

My acoustic guitar. I need music in my life wherever I am.

If you could switch lives with anyone for a day who would it be?

That’s a tricky one. I’d probably say Romesh Dodangoda. He’s a legendary Welsh music producer, I’d love to know what a day in his life is like because I’m a huge fan of his production skills and he gets to work with so many huge bands.

What is your ultimate ambition?

Kind of cliché but it would be to be in a successful band and make music for a job or be a respected record producer and have my own studio. Whatever happens in life I’ll be making music though!

If you could change anything in the world what would you change?

I think it’d be that I’d have started playing and appreciating music more when I was younger.
