Why “Sex and the City” Will Never Not Be Relevant

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

As some of you may or may not know, yesterday was the anniversary of the very first episode of the iconic HBO series, “Sex and the City.” Yes, that’s right, the premiere of “Sex and the City” happened on June 6th all the way back in 1998, making it eighteen years and one day old. Does that make anyone else feel old? Yet this show will always remain relevant to women of all ages, no matter how many years pass by.

Here are just some of the many life lessons “Sex and the City” has taught us.

1. The right guy doesn’t always come at the right time.

Carrie and Mr. Big (a.k.a. John James Preston) were always off and on from the first episode all the way through to the first movie. Although they eventually ended up happily married, there was a long road leading up to it.

2. Never give up on love.

Charlotte was famous for her perseverance in finding love. Despite an unsuccessful first marriage, Charlotte never gave up on true love. In fact, she even ended up meeting her true love during the divorce process.

3. Shoes are a truly a girl’s best friend.

Carrie’s closet will always be #goals. Specifically, her collection of Manolo Blahnik shoes. Bradshaw showed us that the right pair of shoes can not only complete your outfit, but also boost your entire attitude, even if your feet are killing you from wearing them!

4. Never lose sight of yourself.

This is one of my favorite lines from “Sex and the City.” It’s okay to be in love with someone else, but never forget to fall in love with yourself first.

5. Your besties will always have your back.

These four girls have their ups and downs, but they have stuck with each other through everything. From Samantha’s breast cancer, to Carrie getting left at the altar, to Charlotte’s fertility problems, they’re always there for each other. So thanks S&C for proving that with your girls by your side, you can get through anything.
