USC Student Opinion on the Creepy Clown Luring Kids into the Woods in SC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

We’ve got some hard-hitting news coming to you fast. In fact, if you’re from South Carolina, Greenville in particular, then this news is going to freak you out.

Basically, people in a neighborhood in Greenville, South Carolina have reported seeing people dressed as clowns attempting to lure kids into the nearby woods.

This is obviously a distressing thought for a multitude of reasons. First off, the thought of anyone trying to lure kids into the woods is terrifying. Second, if you are trying to lure children anywhere, why would you ever dress up as a clown? Seriously, kids are terrified of clowns. Hell, most people seem to be terrified of clowns. And quite honestly, who wouldn’t be? Their makeup always looks messed up, and there doesn’t seem to be anything that fun about them.

We’re not alone in this belief either. In fact, the students at USC have plenty of thoughts on this creepy story:

“Absolutely heinous. I’m literally speechless. Just no.”  – Marie Knoll, junior

“I feel like the clown approach is a bad idea. If I ever see a clown in the woods I am leaving forever.” – Reilly Tuccinard, junior

“Hahah WTF. That’s messed up.” – Meredith Sipe, sophomore

“Um, that’s terrifying.” – Morgan Wilkinson, junior

“Wait, that’s creepy AF.” – Abby Givens, junior

“How could someone not think that was creepy?” Courtney Leverett, junior

“Terrifying!!!” –Cassie Sobers, junior

Police are still investigating the matter. However, a spokesperson for the Greenville County Sheriff’s office told The Atlantic that all of this media attention might be making it harder to catch the culprits. The reason for that is because the police aren’t sure which pictures being shared are real and which aren’t.

The story sounds like it’s straight out of Stephen King’s It, and it’s certainly got plenty of South Carolinians freaked. Suddenly the phrase, “don’t talk to strangers” seems even more relevant than ever, but maybe “don’t talk to clowns” should be added to the list of “dont’s” your parents always told you too.

What do you guys think, was this just a harmless prank or are there much more heinous motives? Let us know at south-carolina@hercampus.com or on any of our social channels which are listed below!
