To say that going to college during a pandemic is stressful and overwhelming is an understatement. There is so much information that it is nearly impossible to read every article, listen to every story, and stay up to date with university operations. So, to make it a little easier and slightly less overwhelming, I have broken down exactly what you need to know about SAFE (saliva) testing below.

1. What

SAFE testing is a simple, non-invasive, accurate way to diagnose COVID in people who may be asymptomatic carriers for the virus. Test results typically come within 24-48 hours after testing.

In other words, not everyone who has the virus will feel any significant symptoms, if any symptoms at all. In order to mitigate the spread of the virus, the University of South Carolina is now offering saliva tests. However, if you are experiencing any symptoms of COVID (fever or chills, shortness of breath, dry cough, loss of taste or smell, etc.) and/or have been in close contact with someone who has the virus, you should get a nasal swab test as soon as possible. It is important to note that SAFE tests are not meant to replace nasal swab testing.

2. Who

SAFE testing is available for all University of South Carolina students, faculty, and staff.

3. When

SAFE testing is available for students every weekday from 10 A.M.-12 P.M. at Davis field. If you are a faculty or staff member, SAFE testing is available from 12:30 P.M.-2:30 P.M. at 650 Lincoln on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

NOTE-Currently the University is only able to perform 200 SAFE tests for students on a daily basis due to staffing shortages. To stay up to date about the latest testing capacity visit https://sc.edu/safety/coronavirus/index.php

4. How

SAFE testing is easy and reliable!

SAFE testing involves spitting 5mL of saliva into a test tube (yes, it’s that easy)! You must not eat 30 prior to testing and must stop drinking water 10 minutes prior. University employees will direct you where to sit/stand, how to register your sample, and where you can get your results.

5. Why

As noted in High School Musical, “We are all in this together.”

As Gamecocks, we always look out for ourselves and one another. By participating in SAFE testing we are doing our part to keep ourselves and our community safe.

Have a happy and healthy semester!

Hey y'all! I am a junior at the University of South Carolina studying Public Health a with minor in Spanish. I am pre-med and one day hope to be a sports neurologist. In my free time, I love watching football and soccer, hanging out with friends, and going to the beach!
