Our new favorite app for the weekend: “HangOut – Events Around You”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

There is a new app on the scene, not just any app, but one that “refreshes” the way friends interact with each other.

It began on a Friday night when two roommates, Daniel and Mitchell, were struggling to find what the move on campus was. They desired a platform where they could effortlessly; both privately and anonymously, express what their plans are. From there, HangOut was born; a new way for peers to find and share plans.

This app takes the frustration of those group message notifications we quite often cringe at.

“We make it easier for our users to start their weekend nights out earlier and have more memorable stories to share with their friends from home.”

THE APP

You must be thinking to yourselves, “but what does this app do?” Made by college students, for college students, HangOut is a location-based event planner that allows users to post/view what is happening on their campus or in their area, how many people are going, and who. The average user enjoys the ability to see what the buzz on campus is and what type of social gatherings (sporting events, concerts, meetings, bars, etc.) their friends and classmates are going to.

This app is split into two main pages; My Area and Newsfeed.

The “My Area” page is an Anonymous Location-Based Feed.

Here, you see what is going on in your city or school community.

  • Anonymously promote an event to the HangOut community in a 5-25 mile radius.
  • See the amount of people going out for Thirsty Thursday in order to decide whether you are going to miss out if you stay in to watch Netflix.
  • Looking to share an upcoming meeting for your club in order to find new members? This is the perfect spot.

Newsfeed” page is a Private, Friends-Based Feed.

Here, you can easily see which of your friends are free and create a HangOut to keep the good times rolling.

  • Eliminates the need of group chats.
  • See what your friends have posted and say “I’m In” to the ones you
  • You can also see what their friends who go to other schools are doing.
  • Use this page to coordinate trips to the dining hall or Chipotle.
  • Post the event a couple hours before lunch, then check back to see what friends are going to join you. No one likes eating alone. No one likes group messages.

TRADITION

HangOut is all about keeping tradition; it is passionate about sharing the stories of college students exploring their talents and the world. Creators hope the platform can be used to fuel others to live with a similar perspective and go on their own unique adventures. Currently, the three ambassadors of HangOut are taking a year off from school to explore all Europe has to offer. If you have a story that you would like to share, please contact the team at HangOut! You can find their contact information at the bottom of this article.

The HangOut team also works very closely with Student Government, Greek Life, and other school organizations on campus. To join the team and help spread HangOut to your community please email daniel@officialhangout.co.
