The Guide to an Eclectic Living Space

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

Eclectic designing trends are making their mark in style books and celebrity homes everywhere. The mixture of different styles and textures gives any space the perfect vibe. The key to establishing the ultimate eclectic living space is variety! Try pairing styles together, such as a rustic coffee table with some modern teak chairs. Then, of course, throw in some pops of color, and a few beautiful plants and you’re good to go!

The interior designer who mastered the art is Arianna Danielson. In terms of Danielson’s beautiful designs, she says, “There are no rules when it comes to design in this house.” Her goal when designing is to make a space bold and daring, yet still functional.

Danielson incorporates a lot of pieces from Urban Outfitters Home and Apt2B which she claims to always be her “go-to.” She has items from both stores, and more available for purchase on her website. She also takes pride in thrifting for furniture and decor. An eclectic design doesn’t have to be expensive. You can find diamonds in the rough anywhere if you look in the right places! Thrifting is all about renewal: giving something old new life adds character to any design space, and of course, one of a kind items can’t be beaten. Vintage items and antiques can add the personal touch you’re looking for without having to empty your pockets.

Eclectic design is what you make it, whether it be boho, modern or even industrial. Creating a focal point is key, as it is in any design technique. The bold burnt orange and velvet couch featured in Danielson’s living room is the perfect eye-catching focal point to start decorating from.

Always remember the rule “There are no rules!”.  Of course, throwing random things together with no thought doesn’t count as “eclectic design,” but if you are trying to bring together an intentional look, you’re good to go. Adding some modern artwork with vintage furniture is a beautiful way to showcase this design technique as well. Kourtney Kardashian’s home office reveal is a perfect example of this.

If you want to start designing this way, Arianna Danielson’s guide is a perfect way to start. Her home is a beautiful space that anyone would want to live in. Check out Urban Outfitters Home for some unique pieces to get you started on eclectic living!
