Essential Factors to Consider When Selecting Your First Apartment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

It’s exciting to get your first “big girl” apartment. Whether you’re moving off campus, living with roommates, or moving to a new city for a post-grad job, having a place you can call your own is an indescribable feeling. However, through all the excitement, it can be easy to lose track of what really matters and what factors truly impact you.

1. What can you actually afford?

Before signing any lease, it’s important to run the numbers first. The common rule of thumb is to spend no more than 30% of your gross monthly income. However, in my opinion, it’s always better to live below your means and save more. To do this, think about getting a roommate or taking 30% of your net income instead of gross.

2. DistANCE TO FREQUENT LOCATIONS

Many people fail to consider the distance to their favorite spots when choosing where to live. Yes, obviously, think about your workplace and your favorite grocery stores, but don’t forget about your local bank, pharmacy, gym, or doctor’s office. Think about the places you frequent relatively often. Some might be closer than others, but it’s always good to consider.

3. DistANCE TO Airport

Bouncing off my last bullet, the distance to the airport can be a make-or-break factor. Maybe you’re someone who travels often and leaves at the last minute; being closer can save you much struggle later. It’s also important to consider the noise. With an airport close by, you will hear noisy planes flying by at random times throughout the day. The same can be said about trains.

4. College Town – Game Days

If you’re a college student or just live in a college town, please remember to take into account the heavy traffic and loud noises on Saturdays during football season! If you live near a stadium, don’t even try to leave your place on game day; a short five-minute drive can easily turn into 45 minutes. If you’re a college student, maybe you’ll like the walkability to the stadium.

5. aMENITIES

While having cool amenities like a pool, gym, work space, or game room all sounds fun, really think about your usage of these amenities. Do you have a gym membership somewhere else you like better? Does your job require you to be in person? Do you like swimming? There is no point in paying a monthly amenities fee for these if you won’t ever use them.
