Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

With just four months into 2025, television has kicked off the year with an explosive and notable start, bringing back some of the most anticipated shows and debuting new ones. While many have hit the mark, others have unfortunately fallen short and led to great disappointment. In this list, we’ll dive into which 2025 releases are worth bingeing and which ones are best left skipped so far!

Severence Season 2: Binge it

Making its big debut in 2022, Severance has taken the media by storm with its much-awaited release of Season 2. Severance explores a group of employees for the ominous company Lumon who’ve had the severed procedure, a procedure that surgically splits their memories between work and personal life, creating two separate versions of themselves labeled as their “innies,” who only exist at work, and “outies,” who live the rest of their lives unaware of what happens inside the office. As the characters begin to question their reality and the true purpose of Lumon, a mind-bending conspiracy unfolds that leaves fans with many awaited questions to be answered in Season 3.

After its jaw-dropping finale that left viewers shattered, the series continues to grow in recognition as fans continue to speculate and theorize the fate of our beloved characters and the intricacy behind Lumon’s true intentions. Throughout the show, fans grow deeply attached to our leading characters, whose layers and relationships raise the stakes. By examining the characters’ state of being both in their “innie” and “outtie” form, it forces viewers to examine their own selves, morals, and existence. It’s a brilliant commentary that explores capitalism, identity, trauma, grief, free will, and control with an exceptional cast that explores some of humanity’s deepest desires and fears.

Yellowjackets Season 3: Skip It

First premiering in 2021, Yellowjackets took the world by storm with its bold, disturbing, but deeply compelling plot that examines human nature at its peak of survival. The dual storytelling follows a group of teenage soccer players surviving the aftermath of a tragic plane crash that leaves them stranded in the wilderness as their older siblings continue to grapple with their actions and trauma. The first two seasons kept viewers hooked with its slow-burn suspense and dark twists that forced them to examine their morals and limits and understand humanity’s darkest desires. While the story held up with captivating twists and compelling mystery, season three has quickly fallen short and lost its way. With insufficient answers for so many questions, season three delves into lackluster plots that feel irrelevant or a copout to the original story. While the pacing has always served as a rewarding slow burn, season three has been unbearably slow, with many moments feeling dragged out and pointless. The deep-rooted investment and care we once placed on the characters has started to dwindle with season three, giving fans very little reason to care or to watch.

InvinCible Season 3: Binge It

With a dedicated fanbase, Invincible kicked off the year with its best season yet, pushing storytelling to new heights that only scratch the surface of what the show is yet to do.  Invincible is an animated superhero series that follows Mark Grayson, who appears as a seemingly ordinary teenager, yet his father is the world’s most powerful superhero, Omni-Man. As Mark develops powers of his own, he quickly begins to uncover dark truths about his father and the cost of heroism, forcing him to reevaluate his morals. The show gained praise for its intense and graphic action, emotional depth, and shocking twists that set it apart from typical superhero shows. Season three is an emotional, thought-provoking roller coaster that leaves fans on the edge of their seat during every episode. It continues to morph our perception of “right and wrong,” blurring the lines between good and evil as we examine the depths of our heroes’ and villains’ actions and backgrounds. With jaw-dropping animation, the season’s final episodes stand as two of the series’s best, leaving fans impatiently wanting more.

Adolescence: Binge It

Shot in one take per three episodes, Adolescence is Netflix’s newest hit that has left fans in awe of its intricate filmmaking and acting. The psychological crime drama centers on 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for the murder of his classmate Katie Leonard. As the tense investigation unfolds, it becomes quite evident that Jamie has been subjected to severe cyberbullying,  leading to a complex and questioning exploration of his actions and the influences surrounding him. With an astonishing and gut-wrenching performance, Owen Cooper’s portrayal of Jamie is both powerful and terrifying, leaving the audience speechless. The series deeply explores the growing concern for technology’s influence over our youth and the unbreakable pressures and expectations that are constantly resting on them. The series’ brilliant and immersive filming technique allows the audience to feel present as they explore the narrative’s chilling emotional journey.

The White Lotus Season 3: Binge It

Unable to get enough, The White Lotus is currently in season three,  with fans raving over the new cast of characters and shockingly complex and wild plots. The White Lotus is a satirical drama-comedy series that focuses on the lives of both the high-end guests and the staff at a luxurious Hawaiian resort. Each season dives into the personal dramas, secrets, and tensions of the characters, which often explores the darker side of privilege and human nature. The critically acclaimed and award-winning season continues to deliver its sharp and clever writing that questions our new cast of complex characters in a way the show has never seen before. The show often explores issues such as class, race, and power dynamics seen throughout the different cast of characters and relationships. With a new all-star cast, fans are anticipating the final episode of the season with much excitement and eagerness.

The Good American Family: Skip It

It wouldn’t be television without a little bit of controversy. Premiring this year Good  American Family, explore the complex yet controversial true story of the Barnett family that follows the adoption of their daughter Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian girl with dwarfism. The narrative follows the subsequent events that led the Barnetts to abandon her with the allegation that she was an adult posing as a child. The series is told from multiple perspectives that explore themes of bias, perspective, and trauma. While the show had the potential to deliver a chilling and jaw-dropping true story that both captivated and informed viewers, the show was criticized for having too much creative liberty with the truth in distorting the facts to make it more dramatic, further leading to accusations of dishonesty. Additionally, both the writing and performances fail to hold up or provide an impact. With the characters underdeveloped and the dialogue unnatural, the success of portraying this story to an accurate and appropriate depiction stood very little chance.

Daredevil Born Again: Watch It

The 2015 to 2018 Daredevil Netflix series is a cult classic that has comic fans still raving about it. With its stellar cast, carefully crafted plot, cinematic shots, and thrilling actions,  what isn’t there to love? When announcing the new reboot of the show starring the original cast, there was a lot of speculation and concern about Disney+ +  taking over. That being said, the show kicked off with a powerful, gun-wrenching opening that symbolizes a new era for the characters, leaving them to navigate a new set of moral challenges in a rapidly changing world. Managing his double life, Matt Murdock’s (Daredevil) commitment to justice with Fisk’s corrupt influence leads to a tense collision that impacts the city’s fate once more. With the characters more complex than ever, the story is rich and engaging, with its focus on grief, justice, morality, and the blur between good and evil. With Disney +  already confirming a second season before the first one completely errors, fans can expect one of their favorite heroes to be back better than ever.

The Pitt: Binge It

While Medical dramas are often deeply criticized and controversial for their lack of realism and depth, ”The Pitt” stands out through its deeply immersive storytelling and complex character development throughout the last 13 episodes. With each of its 15 episodes covering one hour of a 15-hour shift, the story unfolds in real time, offering a tense, quick-paced, and authentic portrayal of emergency room dynamics rarely depicted in television. While the show can be seen as too intense for some viewers, others see it as a refreshing depiction of the medical feild that forces them to think and feel in a way other medical shows fail to do. In addition to its complex set of characters, the series explores numerous medical scenarios that feel jarring and real. Its ability to balance a moving and sharp social commentary that addresses issues such as institutional failures and the impact of misinformation is what makes it a rich and impactful watch to viewers.
