10 Ways to Save Money (and the Environment)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

The earth costs us, individually, thousands of dollars each year. We cost the earth its habitats and species. Definitely not okay. Follows these tips to save your bank account and save the earth!

1. Drink tap water.

If you’re worried about filtration, buy a Brita filter for your sink. (Did you know most bottled water isn’t even filtered?) In 2014 alone, Americans spent $13 billion dollars on bottled water…don’t be one of them

2. Use energy efficient light bulbs.

You’ll save BIG on your electric bill.

3. Time your showers.

I play music in the shower and try to never go over two songs… it’s become a race against myself to beat my time and it saves me money on my water bill.

4. Carpool.

Hitch a ride with your roomie or take a shuttle! We all hate watching the numbers tick up at the pump!

5. Keep doors and windows closed and covered.

Doing this will trap in the cool or warm air that you want. You’ll thank us later when you realize how much air conditioning and heat take up your overages!

6. Buy a drying rack.

Heaters take up more energy than almost any other appliance…and cost us the most.

7. Recycle

If you use “Recyclebank,” you can save up to $130 a year through coupons they’ll give you for recycling!

8. Clean out your car

The lighter your car is, the less gas it will take to move it!

9. Buy e-books

Most of the time they’re cheaper, but there’s an even better perk. When using an e-book, you can search the text to find exactly what you’re looking for! Because who wants to read the whole chapter?

10. DIY

Make empty wine bottles into light fixtures and transform old jars into vases. Break out the glitter and glue!

Give your wallet a break and give the earth a chance for a comeback. Share these tips and always keep them in the back of your mind!
