5 Jobs to Have as a College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sonoma chapter.

College is probably the hardest time to find a job that would work with your schedule. Wanting to pass all your classes but needing money to pay for those classes, bills, or yourself. The number one advice I would give any college student looking for a job is to make sure you have your schedule balanced. If you have enough time to get manage a job, academics, and maybe a social life; go get a job. If you believe you can do that, here are 5 ideal jobs to have as a college student.

1. Any job on campus

Having a job on campus is convenient in a way of being able to go to class and work after or vice versa. Jobs on campus are flexible and understand when it comes to balancing an academic and extracurricular activity schedule. Especially for Sonoma State, a majority of if not all jobs on campus limit student employees to only working 20 hours a week. Examples of jobs you can have on Sonoma State’s campus are Information Desk, Tour Guide, Library Assistant, Dining Room employee, or interning for a professor, tutor, grader, etc. This jobs help with reference letters from future job opportunities and gaining communication skills.

2. Server

A restaurant serving job is financially helpful for college students through a minimum wage paycheck plus tips. Server position helps build your customer service skills and team working skills in a stressful environment. Being a server opens up wide ranges of job opportunities in any field.

3. Nanny

A babysitter/nanny position is one of the most flexible jobs to have with a busy college student schedule. You can also control how much money you are asking for. It’s a job that is paid under the table and doesn’t have to be taxed out.

4. Bank Teller

We don’t learn a lot about paying bills, doing taxes, etc. We are thrown into college expected to do “adult” task with no prior knowledge. Being a bank teller helps with exactly that, it helps with the financing side of growing up.

5. Work Study Jobs

Many students who qualify for financial aid can work in the Federal Work Study program. Depending on your schedule, you can get a job in a particular field you are studying. This job can be part time or full time. For example, biochemistry majors can land a job working in the lab.

Carly is one of the CCs for Sonoma State University, and she is majoring in communications and minoring in sociology. She grew up in southern California, and even though she misses the warm beach, she really enjoys living in wine country in northern CA. She has always had a passion for writing and is so grateful that Her Campus allows her to share that love and encourage others to join in the fun.
