Social Media Spring Cleaning: 6 People You Should Stop Following

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Nobody really needs 2,000 friends on their Facebook. Especially when half of those people you don’t even talk to anymore. It’s time to do a cleanse. A social media cleanse that is. These are the six types of people you should stop following on social media right now.

1. Middle school friends you don’t speak to anymore.

You made your Facebook page the second you turned 13 because your parents wouldn’t let you lie about your age and join the world of social media early. You then proceeded to send friend requests to everyone that went to your middle school. Now that it is 2017 and you’re in college, it’s time to say goodbye to those old middle school friends. Chances are you don’t speak to any of them anymore and their lives aren’t all that interesting.

2. High school gossip accounts.

It was important to follow certain people in high school, especially those fake accounts that would expose everyone or would post messages from other people annonymously. These accounts are either dead or irrelevant to you now. Also, you now recognize you partook in cyber bullying and should probably want to remove all evidence. Unfriend all of those fake gossip accounts ASAP and – while you’re at it – unfriend the high school homies you don’t truly keep up with anymore, too.

3. Ex-boyfriends.

This is so imporant. Stop creeping on them. Stop decoding their cryptic statuses like “a lot on my mind” into something like “I messed up, I really miss her.” It’s not worth the heartbreak – and nine times out of 10, he really is just thinking about random stuff, not you. It’s even worse when he gets a new girlfriend, you don’t want to be comparing youself. Give yourself a break and unfriend all of your ex-boyfriends.

4. Firstsemester hook up.

Retweet the explanation about ex-boyfriends. Memories of being a booty call is embarassing enough. Add having to see pictures of him in a committed relationship and you just feel nauseous. Say good riddance to the first-semester hook up on all social media accounts.

5. Mean girls you only follow to compare your lives.

First of all, even though we all do it, stop comparing your life to others’. Second of all, get rid of the urge by unfollowing all of those people. Is there someone you always compete with? Unfriend them. Is there someone who posts all the time about how great their life is that just rubs you wrong? Unfriend them. Is there someone who likes to make petty comments on your pictures and statuses, such as “Bless your heart.” Unfriend her RN!

6. Literally anyone you dont speak to anymore or that doesnt make you happy in life

Scrolling through your timeline will feel a whole lot better after you eliminate the clutter these individuals cause.
