How to Do Halloween When You Don’t Want to Go to the Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Hallo-week has officially commenced on college campuses. It’s time to think of a funny costume, gather your friends and get your spooky on. Allow me to set the scene for your typical college Halloween party:

You walk into the venue. Your eyes begin to water from fog and body odor. You’ve just seen Post Malone, a priest and Donald Trump jumping to “Mo Bamba.” You have to pee but the crowd is so thick and lights are so bright that you resign yourself to holding it and bopping to some obscure EDM with the occasional remixed version of “Zombie” by The Cranberries.

This can absolutely be your idea of the perfect Halloween. If you are in the right frame of mind and with the right people, this can be a blast. However, if this isn’t your speed, I have put together your game plan to find alternatives!

1. Solidify your group!

The people that you choose to spend Halloween with are definitely the most important part of the equation. Make sure you are all on the same page about the kind of night you are aiming to have.

2. Choose a costume!

Now that you have your group, a world of group costumes has opened up to you! Maybe do something sexy. You could always do a group from a sitcom like Friends or That 70’s Show. It’s always a blast to do something obscure that only you and your friends get, too.

Now you can plan your night! Here are some boo-tiful options!

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Damn it, Janet! In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to do Halloween. You will most likely have no problem finding a local theatre company showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Halloween. Typically they’ll play the movie with a cast acting in front of it. You get to participate with props and yell at the screen – it’s a blast. There’s also always a weird sexual energy that’s awesome if you are willing to embrace it…

Concert

If you live in an area with live music venues, you’ll have a couple of options on the concert front. Venues will often host costume parties and music specific to Halloween. This is a great way to do nightlife without clubbing. You’ll also have the opportunity to win prizes and money at a lot of these contests!

Haunted House

Haunted houses can be hilarious with the right group. I would recommend gauging how your friends do with jump scares and clowns before you choose this route. I tend to be a screamer and my friends proceed to make fun of me. If you’re down for that though, it’s awesome.

Pumpkin Carving

Go to your local pumpkin patch and pick out some pumpkins! This is so wholesome, you gotta love it. There are some really fun pumpkin patches that also have rides and performances. Some have mazes a la The Shining.

P.S. a pumpkin patch makes for a PERFECT Instagram post.

A Night In

Curl up with some cider, get cozy and throw on a scary movie! Sometimes the simplest options are the best! Check out some scary movies here!
